Return to School Update
Just a reminder that your Return to In-person Intent Survey should be completed by Sunday, November 8. To support your family with determining the best plan for your Wolverine, I have provided the guidance below. Please bring any additional questions or concerns to my Principal Town Hall meeting this Sunday from 5:00-6:00 PM!
What does Wilder look like when students return? *Plans are subject to change pending results of survey and program needs. Students and faculty will only be allowed to attend school in-person if they meet the requirements on the student and faculty screening forms, do not have a fever, and cannot explain an illness with a chronic condition or known diagnosis. Students that ride the bus will sit one to a seat unless sitting with a sibling. Siblings may share a bench seat. Buses are sanitized after each run. Car riders may enter school and report to their Advisory block beginning at 8:00 AM Any student arriving after 8:30 AM will be greeted at the front door by a staff member after their parent and/or guardian rings the doorbell. Visitors will not be allowed to enter the building for student drop-off. Daily schedule remains the same (8:30-2:00 PM) with the school day beginning in Advisory. In-person learners who are assigned to a teacher remaining in the virtual setting will be supervised by a classroom monitor or support staff during the entire class. We will continue to follow a Day 1/Day 2 schedule. On Wednesdays, all instruction will be virtual. Students will meet virtually with their Advisory teacher from 8:30 - 9:00 AM. The remainder of the school day may be used to visit teachers during office hours (9:00-11:30 AM) and/or complete assignments. During this time rooms will be provided with additional cleaning. In-person students and faculty will maintain 6 ft distancing with a minimum of 2 ply face coverings at all times. Students and faculty will not share items (papers, writing utensils, manipulatives) Each student desk/table will have a desk guard on their desk. At the end of each class students and faculty will wipe down their areas with disposable hand sanitizing wipes. During transitions, students will move through halls in one direction to limit contact. While in the halls students must wear face coverings and will not be allowed to gather or socialize in groups. When in-person students arrive at their class, they will receive another wipe to assure their area has been sanitized. An escort system will be utilized when students are moving to the cafe, clinic, and offices. Restroom usage will be limited to two students at a time to maintain social distancing. A sign-in log will be used in the event of the need for contact tracing. Students that are ill will be escorted to the school nurse for evaluation and if deemed appropriate they will be isolated in our Sick Clinic. This will allow for less chance of transmission and better care. All students sent to the sick clinic must be picked up by parents immediately and follow recommendations from the school health staff. We will continue to serve hot food items from the cafeteria for breakfast and lunch. All students will maintain a 6 ft distance from peers during mealtime. We are still considering options for dining spaces. Water fountains will be out of service to avoid transmission of germs. Clear water bottles may be brought from home. Bottles are not allowed to be shared. Food deliveries and item drop off will not be accepted in the front office to avoid contamination. No volunteers will be allowed in the building until further notice. After completing the early dismissal process, any student leaving school prior to dismissal will be escorted to the front door to meet their parent and/or guardian at the front door. Visitors will not be allowed to enter the building for early dismissal. The instructional day will end at 2:00 PM. Rooms will be thoroughly cleaned each evening by our custodial staff. At this time we are not certain of the following: Will class schedules change for students? Will my child remain with their current teacher? How many students will be in each classroom? Will teachers be teaching in-person and virtual at the same time?
Register your Wolverine for the 2020-2021 Spelling Bee!
This year, the Scripps National Spelling Bee has developed an online testing platform that will allow Wilder Middle School to host a school spelling bee program remotely.
In place of our traditional spelling bee program, we will hold competitions two levels of competition through the online spelling tests. The first step is to spelling bee participation is for you to register for the Scripps National Spelling Bee's online testing platform by visiting http://online-test.spellingbee.com.
I encourage you to watch this video tutorial that will walk you through the registration process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htXzjpnMijc. Additional instructions are included below.
Once you have registered, our teachers and coordinator will be able to assign the appropriate grade-level test to your child. Your child must complete the test before the given deadline, and these tests can be taken on any device with a web browser, including desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smart phones.
The student(s) from each classroom/grade with the highest score(s) will move on to compete at the school level. This year, our school-level competition will be administrated via the online test as well.
Our school champion will move on to represent Wilder Middle School in the district spelling bee. Details are still be confirmed regarding the HCPS Spelling Bee.

There is no need to register a different email address for each child in your household.
Please reach out to our school coordinator, Ms. Litchfield (kmlitchfield@henrico.k12.va.us), or your student's ELA teacher, if you have questions about our school spelling bee.
