21 Sports ... 1 Team ... WE ARE HOBART!
Whether you were a Kobe fan or not, you have to respect his maturation over the course of his career and appreciate the impact he was trying to make on the next generation of athletes.
His "MAMBA MENTALITY" is something that not only drove him to greatness on the court, but can also be seen outside the world of sports.
The "MAMBA MENTALITY" comes down to this:
Be the best version of yourself ... it's a constant quest to try to be better today than you were yesterday. It's all about focusing on the process ... it's about 4 a.m. workouts, doing more than the next guy, and then trusting in the work you’ve put in when it’s time to perform. Hard work outweighs talent -- every time.
The Brickies know a little something about putting in hard WORK WORK WORK and as much as our student athletes have goals to WIN, the purpose focused on by our #21sports1team is very similar to the MAMBA MENTALITY. No matter where you are or what you're doing ... ALWAYS pursue being your VERY BEST and realize that the only way to accomplish that is to put in TIME and HARD WORK. Throw in a POSITIVE ATTITUDE and COMPASSION FOR OTHERS and you've got yourself something special :).
Over the past week, whether it was purposeful or not, our winter sports were ALL exhibiting the MAMBA MENTALITY and it led to some memorable moments ... two bounce back wins on the hardwood, some personal bests in the water and on the floor/bars/beam/vault, a STATE FINALS appearance with a ball and 10 pins, and a shot at a special sectional title!
I know ... it's Super Bowl Sunday, but before it all get's underway, why don't you take a minute, put down the plate o' goodies and relax ... it's time for BricksCenter!

Mamba Mentality - focus on the process and trust the work you've put in!
The Brickies entered the 2019-2020 post-season ranked #9 in the state and boasting a 14-2 dual meet record with the only losses coming against #5 Crown Point and #6 Chesterton. After winning the Harvest Classic @ Lake Central, the Tom Cameron Invite @ Merrillville, and the NCC CHAMPIONSHIP @ Lowell ... our boys were poised and prepared for the task at hand. Through the 1st 2 rounds, Hobart only suffered 4 losses and had all 14 wrestlers competing for either a CHAMPIONSHIP or a 3rd/4th place finish! Not only were the Brickies in GREAT position with all weight classes advancing individually to next weekend's IHSAA REGIONAL (hosted @ Hobart High School by the way), but they also led Portage by 28.5 points heading into the final round and things looked very good for title #30!
As the finals got underway, the Hobart faithful were hoping to see more of a coronation than a competition ... much like the NCC CHAMPIONSHIP, but Portage had other plans. At the halfway point, the Indians had closed the gap to 7 points and were pushing hard to upset the Brickies. Junior Tyler Turley got Hobart back on track with a WIN by Technical Fall (16-0) at 152 and then senior Hayden Homoky INGNITED the fans with a THRILLING come-from-behind WIN at 160 to extend the lead back to 19 points in the team standings and our boys NEVER LOOKED BACK!! Three more titles from sophomore Jacob Simpson (170), senior Mark Mummey (195) and junior Bobby Babcock (220) SEALED THE DEAL and the Brickies brought home #30 to add to their already-crowded trophy case!! The final team score had Hobart with a whopping 291 points compared to 2nd place Portage's 271.
CONGRATULATIONS to Coach Cook, his OUTSTANDING staff, and all of our boys for WINNING the 2020 IHSAA SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP! It was a GREAT DAY TO BE A BRICKIE!!
Here are the results from each weight class on Saturday:

120 lbs - sophomore Ruben Padilla - 2nd Place
126 lbs - senior Nathan Schammert - SECTIONAL CHAMPION
132 lbs - junior Cristian Padilla - 3rd Place
138 lbs - junior Ronald Lofton - 4th Place
145 lbs - freshman Gavin Miller - 4th Place
152 lbs - junior Tyler Turley - SECTIONAL CHAMPION
160 lbs - senior Hayden Homoky - SECTIONAL CHAMPION
170 lbs - sophomore Jacob Simpson - SECTIONAL CHAMPION
182 lbs - junior Cameron Smith - 2nd Place
195 lbs - senior Mark Mummey - SECTIONAL CHAMPION
220 lbs - junior Bobby Babcock - SECTIONAL CHAMPION
285 lbs - senior Chad McLean - 3rd Place
As stated earlier, next week ALL 14 Brickie wrestlers will be competing for another title as we HOST the IHSAA REGIONAL! If you haven't been out to see these boys SHINE yet this winter, NEXT SATURDAY would be a PERFECT time to show them your love!
Top 4 in each weight class will advance to the Semi State @ East Chicago.
DON'T STOP NOW BOYS!!

2020 IHSAA SECTIONAL CHAMPIONS!
Basketball
Mamba Mentality - hard work outweighs talent ... every time!
The Lady Brickies finished out their 2019-2020 regular season this past week with two final home contests ... both of them offering an opportunity for Hobart to earn their 10th win of the season, something that had only been done once since 2015.
On Tuesday, Hobart celebrated SENIOR NIGHT prior to tip-off against the Wheeler Lady Bearcats. Early on it looked like the Lady Brickies might control this one as they jumped out to an 11-5 lead after 8 minutes of play thanks to the hot hand of freshman Asia Donald, who scored 9 1st quarter points! Another basket by Donald gave Hobart a 13-7 lead about a two minutes into the 2nd stanza, but that was unfortunately the last points our girls would score in the 1st half as Wheeler charged back to take a 15-13 lead at the break. The 2nd half offered more of the same as the Lady Brickies continued to struggle finding any offensive rhythm and lost a tough one 40-23. Donald, limited in the 2nd half thanks to a sore thumb, led Hobart with 11 points in the loss.
Friday night, the Hammond Lady Wildcats visited the friendly confines in the final game of the regular season for both squads. With the Lady Brickies still in search of that elusive 10th win, Hammond came out hot in the 1st quarter and led 5-0 when Coach Feddeler substituted 5 new faces onto the court ... including foreign exchange student Claudia Torrico-Ledesma. Torrico-Ledesma had been sidelined since Christmas with sickness and missed the last 7 contests. Well, let me just say ... WELCOME BACK CLAUDIA!!! She sparked a 13-0 Lady Brickie run to end the 1st quarter with steals, rebounds, assists and scores! Hobart's run would continue in the 2nd and total 25 CONSECUTIVE POINTS before Hammond would end the drought! By the time Hammond finally found the bottom of the net again, it was too late and our girls CRUISED the rest of the way for an easy 63-32 VICTORY!! It was a PERFECT final home game for our seniors as Coach Feddeler was able to give them a fitting CURTAIN CALL with the final result firmly within our grasp. The HMS 7th & 8th grade teams were also in attendance to be recognized at halftime and see all the action!
Torrico-Ledesma led Hobart with 14 points in her return and senior Grace Nestich added 11 as EVERY LADY BRICKIE who played was able to SCORE!!
THANK YOU to our seniors ... Gabbie Ramirez, Kora Neace, Saenovia Poole, Paige Cooper & Grace Nestich ... for all your hard WORK WORK WORK over the course of your careers and for ALWAYS representing the purple & gold with BRICKIE PRIDE!!
The Lady Brickies finished the regular season with a record of 10-13 and begin IHSAA SECTIONAL play over at Portage High School on Tuesday night as they face Valparaiso in the 7:30 PM game. GOOD LUCK LADIES!! WE BELIEVE!!

Boys
Last Saturday night, Hobart lost a tough one to Munster to drop their season record to 6-6. EVERY time the Brickies have lost this winter, they have responded with a 'W'. This week, the Morton Governors stood in the way of keeping that streak alive as our boys traveled to the Governor's Mansion on Friday for a non-conference contest. With the tragic death of NBA great Kobe Bryant this past week, the Brickies sported warm-up shirts with #8 on the front and #24 on the back ... the two #'s worn by Bryant during his 20-year career with the Lakers ... to honor the Hall of Famer and hopefull channel some of his "MAMBA MENTALITY". Well ... MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! In true Kobe Bryant fashion, our boys out-worked the Governors, BATTLED for every possession and earned a HARD FOUGHT VICTORY 52-47!! The backcourt combo of senior guards Caleb Banjoff (18 points) and Tyler Schultz (13 points) once again led the way for Hobart and junior Quinten White added 7 in the win!!
The Brickies are currently 7-6 on the season and have a HUGE NCC game @ Kankakee Valley on Thursday. LET'S GO BRICKS!!
#MAKETHEMBELIEVE
Special thanks to your 7th & 8th grade teams for coming out to cheer on the Lady Brickies to VICTORY!

Mamba Mentality ... can we be better each time we go out there to compete?
On Thursday night, both Hobart and Lowell joined the Valparaiso Lady Vikings in the Viking Fieldhouse for some fun. So far this winter, our girls have been scoring in the 97's as a team. The Vikings are THE most storied program in Indiana and presented a GREAT opportunity for our girls to SHINE! Well, after the scores were tallied for competition on all 4 events, the Lady Brickies earned a collective score of 98.600!! YES!!!
Sophomore Aisha Arias was FANTASTIC placing 5th in the all around with a 33.35! She was 6th on the vault, 8th on bars and 7th on the floor. Senior Neely Harpp was right begind her with a 7th place finish in the all around at 31.2! Neely was 8th on the vault and 9th on beam. Freshman Daeges Morgan placed 6th on the beam competition and 9th on vault. Classmate Haylie Skripac scored a 4th place finish on the bars, but took an uncharacteristic fall on the beam and scratched the remaining events.
Saturday, the Lady Brickies ... along with 6 other teams ... were competitors at Merrillville's Pirate Pride Invitational! After a strong showing at Valpo yielded a new season-high score for our girls, the goal was to once again show improvement and be the closest version of our best that we can be! How about this one ... Hobart scored a 99.325 and brought home a 3rd place finish!!! WOW!! The new season-best for our girls was the direct result of hard WORK WORK WORK and a Mamba Mentality to improve! Arias led the charge with a 7th place finish in the all-around competition ... Skripac was a team-best 2nd on the bars ... Harpp was 6th on the vault ... and EVERY SINGLE LADY BRICKIE contributed something positive to the team score and 3rd place overall finish! GREAT JOB GIRLS!!
Here are some more results from Saturday:
Sophomore Aisha Arias - 7th on beam, 8th on floor & bars, 17th on vault and 7th all-around!
Senior Neely Harpp - 6th on vault, 15th on beam, 16th on bars & floor and 14th all-around!
Freshman Daeges Morgan - 9th on vault, 10th on beam and 13th on the floor!
Freshman Haylie Skripac - 2nd on bars, 15th on vault, 19th on floor and 15th all-around!
Sophomore Abrianna Piontek - 18th on the bars!
Junior Nataly Ponce - 19th on the beam!

Girls
After finishing 3rd at the NCC CHAMPIONSHIPS last week, if the Hobart Lady Brickies could defeat Lowell on Tuesday, they would finish the NCC Dual Meet season at 4-1 and earn a tie for 2nd place overall in the conference with the Red Devils. Needless to say ... there was a lot on the line on Tuesday and our girls ROSE TO THE OCCASION!! Hobart placed 1st in 8 of the 12 events and WON a TOUGH one 102-84!! Junior JUGGERNAUTS Emma Wright (200 Free & 100 Fly) and Delaney O'Brien 100 Free & 100 Back) each won 2 individual events AND contributed to 2 winning relays to help Hobart stake it's claim as 2nd best in the Northwest Crossroads Conference behind state powerhouse Munster! Boys
Our boys were in the same situation as the girls ... a win over Lowell would earn them a tie for 2nd place on the season in the Northwest Crossroads Conference ... a loss and we would finish 3rd. Despite a number of SEASON-BEST PERFORMANCES by a number of our boys, Lowell was too much on Tuesday and held off a STRONG EFFORT from the Brickies to win 105-78. Hobart's only two wins on the night came from junior Chad Tomaga in the 100 Breast and sophomore Ethan Ferba in diving. Ferba, a SOPHOMORE SENSATION, set a new PR in 1-meter diving and now holds the 4th highest 6-dive total score in SCHOOL HISTORY!!
Here are results from Tuesday's meet:
