Opening: (5-10minutes)
3-Act Lessons (Graham Fletcher): https://gfletchy.com/3-act-lessons/

Optional Unit 07 Activities
Jan Brett's The Mitten: joining and separating
Read aloud the book "The Mitten" by Jan Brett.
Have the students use the mitten/animals templates to have students act out teacher read problems relating to the animals in the book. You can even use animal crackers and real mittens to act out the scenarios as well.
Create story problems based on the different story problem types and have students model using the objects, then drawing the pictorial model, then writing the matching sentence.

Examples of problems:
- There were 4 animals int he mitten. 3 more animals went in the mitten. How many animals are in the mitten now? (joining action result unknown)
- There were 8 animals in the mitten. The fox coughed and 2 animals flew out. How many animals are still in the mitten? (separating action result unknown)
- There are two small animals and three big animals in the mitten. How many animals are in the mitten? (part-part-whole, whole unknown)
For the mitten, two extra animals are needed. Spiral in a class picture graph from the previous unit by having students vote on which animal they would like added to the story when given four choices. This can be done by giving the students four choices, then having them draw their choice on a half sheet of paper during a station.
The Rainbow Fish
Give the students a fish template with glitter jewels (you can also use sparkle stickers or even counters). Create story problems based on the different story problem types and have students model using the objects, then drawing the pictorial model, then writing the matching sentence.
Examples of Problems:
- The rainbow fish had 4 glittery scales. A fish swam by and gave him 5 more glittery scales. How many glittery scales does the rainbow fish have now? (joining action result unknown)
- The rainbow fish had 8 glittery scales. He gave 6 scales away to other fish. How many scales are left on the rainbow fish? (separating action result unknown)
- The rainbow fish has 3 glittery scales. His friend the Pout-Pout fish has 7 glittery scales. How many scales do they have together? (part-part-whole, whole unknown)
About the book: The Rainbow Fish is an international best-seller and a modern classic. Eye-catching foil stamping, glittering on every page, offers instant child appeal, but it is the universal message at the heart of this simple story about a beautiful fish who learns to make friends by sharing his most prized possessions that gives the book its lasting value.

3. Review/Preview:
As seen on: https://pocketofpreschool.com/transportation-centers-and-activities
Have the students use matchbox cars to trace the numbers to 20.
Allow for differentiation by cutting the ten frames off the bottom and having students match the ten frames to the number, or leave on for students that are still practicing counting. You could also have students create their own pictorial representation of the ten frames and match below the numbers that are traced.
Fluency:
- Number and words kids matching activity A set of simple loop cards featuring the numbers and words from 0-20. Children read the number on their card and match to the corresponding word card: http://www.sparklebox.co.uk/1641-1645/sb1641.html#.WjFuzkqnHcs
- I love math
- Salute (one more, one less than your number)
- Draw a card, build a number with manipulatives, draw on a ten frame, and write the digit.
- Any of the activities listed above can be used additionally here for extra practice during the fluency station once students have become familiar with them.
Closing:
- Class Share with predictable chart
- Class Journal
- Personal journal
- Partner talks
- Self assessment
