A note from Principal Abrahamson
It has been cold!
The collaboration between home and school continues to enhance the quality that makes Carver a unique learning environment for students. Winter conferences will be held virtually (in person for those who would like to) on Thursday, March 3rd and Friday, March 4th. This gives families another opportunity to meet with your student’s teachers to discuss learning progress, success, goals, and questions you have about school. Students and staff have worked so hard and want to showcase their work and effort.
In January, Carver students in K-5 participated in Fast Testing. This assessment will give teachers valuable information regarding students' reading and math progress. Teachers also use the data to guide and modify instruction to meet the needs of students. We have a lot to be proud of here at Carver!
As the weather continues to turn colder, the question always comes up… will the students go out for recess? District 622 has guidelines for all our elementary schools to follow as to when students would stay in for recess due to cold weather. Indoor recess will be held when the actual temperature is at zero degrees or below, or the windchill is -10 degrees or below. It is best to assume that students will participate in outdoor recess, and dress them accordingly with snow pants, hats, mittens, scarf, boots and a warm winter jacket.
This year for our National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID) we are offering a district-wide virtual/Zoom event. Zoom Link will be shared in the near future. The theme is, “Recipes for Wellness: Mind, Body, and Soul.” In these stressful times we want to empower families to find wellness in mind, body, and soul. Hear from experts in the field, hear from our students, and connect with other families. Join us Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at 6:30 via zoom.

Young Scholar and SAIL Update
January 21, 2022
Dear 622 Elementary Families,
I am writing to update you regarding the pause in our gifted and talented program (Young Scholar and SAIL, etc.).
Initially, we planned to utilize our gifted and talented staff to help sub when classroom teachers are absent through Friday, January 21, 2022. Based on our current staffing levels, it is necessary to continue this program pause through Friday, January 28, at which time it will be re-evaluated.
I am sorry that this is happening, but again, I want to assure you that while we value these programs we must prioritize keeping our elementary students learning in person.
Please reach out directly to your child’s elementary school if you have any questions.
We thank you for your continued partnership and support of our schools.
Sincerely,
Dr. Troy Miller
Assistant Superintendent
Calling Science Fair Judges!
Hello Carver Families!
I am Clara Rusch, the volunteer coordinator at Carver. It’s been a quiet couple of years in terms of volunteering opportunities because of COVID. I am optimistic that volunteers will be able to work with Carver staff and students again in the future.
Meanwhile, I am looking for a few adult volunteers who would be willing to do some “virtual volunteering”! We need judges for our upcoming Science Fair. A volunteer judge would receive links to videos of student presentations and a form to fill out evaluating that presentation. Volunteers would not judge students in their own child’s grade.
The judging would happen during the week of January 31st, with evaluation forms returned by Monday, February 7th.
If you are interested in helping our school in this way, please complete the attached form. Thank you!
If you are interested in volunteering at Carver once COVID restrictions are listed, please watch for another communication later this spring.
Thanks very much,
Clara Rusch
Be ready for the cold!
Cold weather policy
During the winter, we only keep students in for recess when the temperature drops below zero or if the wind chill is -10° or colder. Please make sure students are appropriately dressed for outside weather as it tends to change frequently in Minnesota. Make sure your student has:
- hat
- mittens/gloves,
- warm jacket
- snow pants
- winter boots
If you are in need of any winter gear, please reach out to us! Be sure to label your child’s name on all clothing. The lost and found is growing each day.

Feedback through Possip
Dear 622 Families,
Your voice matters! We need to hear what is working for you and what your family needs. The district has started to send routine text messages and emails with a few simple questions asking for feedback on your experience with school. You will receive these messages from Possip, an organization we are collaborating with to learn your needs. Your responses can remain anonymous.
Expect to begin receiving the messages monthly starting in December.
