TS Awareness Month: Why Swear 2 Change?
This year our Volunteers jumped in to help us support our families through our 2nd Annual "Swear 2 Change" campaign during Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month. The funds they raised will go towards helping us to continue to provide Camper Scholarships to those in need, as well as a sliding scale of subsidized tuition options for those families who cannot afford the full cost of camp. This past summer we provided 36 scholarships and subsidized tuitions for over 75 campers.
Each year our Swear 2 Change campaign seeks to increase awareness of the complexities of TS. We ask the public to become aware of their own "swearing" that may be a part of their every day language by donating to a "swear jar". Some individuals with TS have a symptom called "coprolalia" (uttering inappropriate words) that causes them to not be able to control the timing or the words that are said. For many typical people inappropriate words have become a part of their every day vocabulary. We hope to raise their awareness in order to increase the compassion and empathy for those with TS who cannot choose to hold them back.
The reality is that only approximately 10% of individuals with TS have coprolalia, so we also seek to educate the public that there are other complexities of the disorder that can be uncomfortable, challenging, and difficult. These associated disorders may include obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), ADD/ADHD, anxiety, depression, sensory difficulties, learning disabilities, or social skills struggles. We hope to spread the message of support for those with coprolalia, while educating our communities that Tourette Syndrome is not all about "swearing"...it can be much more.
Help us continue to "Swear 2 Change" the perception of Tourette Syndrome, get more kids to Camp Twitch & Shout, and encourage the community to be compassionate towards those affected by this disorder. We also hope that you will look beyond their Tourette Syndrome symptoms to discover the amazing talented and wonderful individuals underneath it all!
Thank you to all of our fundraisers and donors!
