Ripon Cathedral School Update

Week ending Friday 13th July 2018

Hackfall Adventures

Big picture
Our Reception children visited Hackfall Woods on Wednesday to see how it had changed from their visits in the autumn, winter and spring. The river was low so the children enjoyed exploring little rock pools and a picnic by the waterside.

A Fond Farewell

Thank you to pupils, parents and friends, past and present, who came after school on Thursday to send their best wishes to Mr Dudman who leaves after fourteen years at Cathedral School. "It was a complete surprise but truly wonderful," said Mr Dudman, "I am really touched by the number of people who came and the very kind words of Mrs Jackson, spoken on behalf of parents. Thanks to all who came, it was good to catch up with so many of our school family, I am only sorry I didn't get to speak to each and every person."

Mr D was presented with a number of gifts including a leavers hoodie, just like the Year 6 children. " I especially love the hoodie," he said, "they even had my age printed on it."

Year Six Ted Talks

On Thursday morning Year 6 children led a series of TED inspired talks on issues that they felt passionate about. Topics included saving the planet, terrorism and homework!

Year Two Fabric Designers

Year 2 have been answering the question 'Why go to Africa?' and their REAL project was to produce African fabric designs. In learning about the topic they discovered South African Ndebele patterns; they created their own pattern designs which were then professionally printed to make tea towels. At Ripon Market the children displayed and sold, their tea towels, everyone was impressed and they sold 50 tea towels! Just a few remain, so let us know if you'd like to purchase one of these limited edition prints!

Year Three Sandwich Makers

The purpose of the Year 3 REAL project was to design and create a healthy sandwich. This week the Year 3 classroom became a food factory. The children made bread rolls with the help of Sally in the school kitchen and then created healthy sandwiches with a range of fillings, some of which were grown in the school garden. Their end products were sold on Ripon Market on Thursday afternoon. Needless to say, they sold out within two hours!

Year Five Planetarium

Year 5 converted their classroom into a planetarium to explain their learning about the solar system and space. An amazing array of models was on display, all torch lit, sparkling lights and Holst's The Planets produced an amazing atmosphere. It was obvious the children had learned a lot and had enjoyed their work.

Year Four - Spring Watch

The REAL project for the Year 4 class was to create a SpringWatch style documentary. The children created a thirty minute programme which not only showcased the wildlife at school but also included, owl pellet dissection and interviews with a wildlife photographer and a bee keeper.

School Production

It's a sell out! Our Tuesday and Wednesday evening performances are fully booked. We have a number of parents on the reserve list, so if you know you are not going to use any tickets you have purchased, we would really appreciate it if you could return them so we can offer them to the parents on the waiting list. You will be reimbursed and returning unused tickets even on the day itself could help. We have a small number of seats remaining for the Wednesday afternoon production.

Forest School 'Must Haves'

We are delighted that we are well on the way to starting our Forest School programme, hopefully in the autumn term. Thanks to the Friends for their fundraising, and the small but hardworking group of volunteers who cleared a suitable area, we are ready to get in some expert help from Outdoor Adventures Forest School. They have a list of 'must haves' and we're wondering if anyone can help to provide some of these items:

milk crates

cable reels

tyres

pipes and guttering

logs/rounds for seating

Thanks in anticipation!

Oscar's Summer Fun Holiday Club

Big picture

Something for Everyone!

On Monday 23rd July, Oscar's will start the holiday club with the opportunity for the children to choose games, crafts and activities to enjoy with their friends. Mr Biggs will be here on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and as we know how much the children love his PE lessons, we're sure it will be fantastic. The first week ends with the chance to have fun in the sun (or chill inside if the weather breaks!).

In the second week, Amelia of Ripon Upstage Academy will be joining us with her team from Monday through to Wednesday. We are thrilled to be able to offer this outstanding opportunity exclusively to the children of our school.

After all the excitement and activity, we think everyone will appreciate the chance to choose games or crafts for the final two days of an action packed two weeks!

Emails have gone out with full details of how to book Oscar's in the summer holidays. Booking online is essential, so do it now to avoid disappointment - places are limited and filling fast! Use the link below with your email address as the username (click forgotten password if you are setting up your account for the first time).
