Ms. Vanessa's Biweekly Class Update

for the weeks of 4/29 & 5/6

Updates

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6-May 10th

Hi: the room parents from each class got together and worked out a school wide plan. This is really important: There are a couple of action items:

Monday, May 6th: send in one flower for your child to give to the teachers. It can be something as simple as a flower from your yard. We will have vases around the class to put them in to spread some cheer.

Wednesday, May 8th:

Potluck
. We are good here. Christina has generously offered to supply plates, cups, napkins, etc. for the all-teacher potluck from our class. The theme is Italian if you want to add anything to the luncheon.
Poster: Tamara is making a poster with photos of all of our kids to hang at the luncheon. Be on the lookout for a request for quotes for the poster, or email back here. We are looking for a quote from your child about what they like the most about Ms. V. and Ms. R., one quote per teacher.
Photo book: Our class gift is a lovely photo book to both teachers of all of the kids and and artwork. This is covered out of our treasury funds (please give $ to Tamara if you haven't done so)

Friday, May 10th:
bring in class supplies! Drop them off on Friday with a card from your child. Her wish list includes:
  • skinny black expo dry erase markers--lots and lots
  • a wall clock--the one she has doesn't keep time (respond to this email if you can do this so we can coordinate)
  • a pencil sharpener--the one she has wore out
  • wipes, baby and clorox
  • a swiffer wet jet and refills
  • lakeshore learning gift cards! Ms. V. buys a lot of curriculum items from here on her own dime. This is really her #1 wish list item. Any amount makes a difference. Order here and it ships for free: https://www.lakeshorelearning.com/order/orderRegularGiftCard.jsp
  • books on her Scholastic wish list: https://orders.scholastic.com/LZ38M

Ms. Vanessa is asking for five minutes of your time

Ms. V. is spending time cleaning the classroom when she needs to be planning the next day. Please pop in right after pick up and ask her what she needs, or grab a cleaning wipe from under the sink and start wiping down desks. She usually needs help with desks, sweeping, vacuuming and sometimes mopping.

Lunch help! Our class has lunch clean up the week of 5/13, every day.

Hi: lunch service has changed slightly. Each class is now responsible for one week of lunch clean up through the end of the year. Ours is the week of 5/13. Since there is no school on 5/13, we just have four days to work. We need at least two people to help every day, Tues 5/14, Weds 5/15, Thurs 5/16, Fri 5/17. You'll start clean up 12:45pm. Please respond to this email with the specific days you can help. Christina will also contact you if we are short people. We need everyone to help. If you haven't volunteered yet this year, this is a good opportunity to do so. Click on the right for more info.

The joy jar is almost full again!

Once those little balls fill the top, the kids will have a bring your stuffed animal to school day. Stay tuned...

Sight word testing

Ms. V. has been testing sight words this week. She goes in order of each list and counts each word only if it is automatically recalled. She explained to us that if there is any sounding out of the word or a pause, it isn't automatic (aka known by sight). Later this week, you'll receive an update of where your child is at. You may be surprised to see your child is on list 1 or 2. This may be due to one word on the list not being recalled automatically. The goal is to have all words on the lists recognized by sight by the end of the school year.

New golden time fun and tickets (aka fun friday)

Every day, our kids will have the opportunity to earn special little golden tickets for following the school's golden rules (i.e., be a spark). It is the same concept as the larger ones you've seen at home, but these are collected for a raffle. At the end of the week, the tickets will be used to draw names to chose activities in different classrooms. For instance, Ms. Emmy's room will have playdough, Mr. Philip will have legos, Ms. Jamie will have lincoln logs...each class has a different fun activity to choose from. There is room for four kids from per class. The first child's ticket that is drawn will get to choose first and so on.

New class pet...coming next week

Sarvar's Mom, Ida, will be bringing in our new class pet next week. It is a hermit crab. The kids will learn about how to care for "TBD named by the kids" and observe it in action.

We did it! We made our class goal...and then some!

Our walk-a-thon was a great success and our class brought in nearly $4,000! Thank you to everyone who participated and volunteered. Our class walked/ran/skipped/jogged a total of 375 laps, including Ms. Vanessa and Ms. Ruth.

Smart Moves--join the class every Friday

Every Friday, join the class to do morning Smart Moves, body puzzles for the mind. It starts right at 8:15am and takes 15 minutes or less. Smart Moves is a series of movements that gets the kids ready to sit and concentrate. Come join the fun and spend a little bit of time with your child in class!

Mystery Readers: spots open on 5/2 & 5/23

There's a last minute mystery reader spot this Thurs (5/2) and then one more open spot for a mystery reader on Thursday, May 23rd. Arrive by 2:30 to sign in at the front office. Thank you for considering! Please sign up here: https://www.findandremind.com/node/112357
