In The Middle
A newsletter to and for the parents of CLMS - 5/17/19
Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The end is near, but it's not yet here. We are working hard to not let the end of the year get away form us. We have tons to do and these days matter. We need to keep our eye on the ball.
Your child may be feeling the crunch of the end of the quarter, the end of the year and that can manifest itself in many ways.
For some kids it is a ton of nervous energy, for others it is being withdrawn, and yet others may just internalize the pressure and just act "off." Keep an eye on your kids, they need a calm and steady hand on the rudder.
A second topic - Please help remind your children that being on time is one of the big ones when it comes to life skills. We have a little drift off at the end of the year. We are still going to have the the expectations that they are on time. If your child comes home grumbling about that, please listen and then give them the “yep being on time is a big deal” speech.
We are all in this together.

Everybody loves a good dissection….well maybe not everybody.
From my heart.
Being nice matters. Being a keeper of decency matters. Being a person who not just refrains from saying nasty things, but has the courage to address it as wrong matters.
This week I had a conversation that was very hard for me about race in our school. I am no expert, and I was born in a very white area and grew up in white area. Where I lived shaped what I thought and how I acted. Most of this was very positive. Some was not. I had no exposure to other cultures until I went away ot school. There were some hard knocks along the way.
We need to help our kids know that some phrases and ways of conducting ourselves are just off base and out of bounds. As I visited with this parent my thinking centered around the idea that most kids who say offensive things are not meaning harm, but the harm is there. Just because we don’t see it, doesn't mean it isn't there. A joke or a comment can really hurt.
The cost for me to be nice, is small. The price of pain for the one who is made to feel bad is huge.
We get to decide who we will be. Let’s lead with love and see what happens.
Life in the outdoor classroom.
Pick up and Drop off
Green is good - If you pick up and drop off as illustrated by the green arrow life is good.
Yellow is not as good - If you feel the need to do it that way, please come around the back way. The reason I do not like it as much is that all that traffic makes us kind of a bad neighbor. We plug up the small road behind the football field, and that makes it rough on the residents.
The red is bad! - When you do your "salmon imitation" and go against the flow you create a traffic problem that could easily be avoided.
We also need to "Goldilocks" the timing, we need to get it just right.
- Too soon and that is a hassle.
- If you arrive early in the PM and park and your child is a pokey person that gums up the works.
We love your kids, but we are not really ready for them until about 7:00.
The big thing is have some patience. We need to be a little bit nice, understand that we are all in the together and keep doing your part to go with the flow.
