The Moreau Messenger
April 2017
A Note from Mrs. Delair!
Happy SPRING!!! It's as though we reach a point in our year that we feel summer is around the corner, yet there is still so much to do and discover! As I wrap up my last couple of months here at Moreau, I have set my own goal. I plan to prepare and assist in a smooth transition for a new leader, yet enjoy every moment with the staff and students because there is always something to celebrate and see. My suggestion to all of you is to keep a calendar going of all of our upcoming events! Spring brings concerts, plays, spirit day, classroom activities and graduations. So much to look forward to! I wish you all a wonderful month and look forward to seeing all of you around our school with upcoming events!
Warm regards,
Laura
Mrs. McNally- Congratulations

Kindergarten Update
April showers will hopefully bring May Flowers! The children are enjoying the nice weather and really look forward to going outside.
Thank you so much for participating in PARP. Please be sure to continue reading at home with your child throughout the rest of the year.
Kindergarten will be busy learning about spring and taking some nature walks to explore and observe the change in weather! The kids will be making several observations and learning about plants and the five senses in science. Be on the look-out for an upcoming 5 senses field trip!
Please welcome Ms. Katie Ehmann who is filling in for Mrs. Howk while she is out on maternity leave. The children simply adore Ms. Ehmann and look forward to having her enrich them with lots of new experiences. She is a wonderful person and a pleasure to work with!
Spring is an exciting, yet critical time for your Kindergartener. They should be becoming more fluent with their reading, sound spelling, practicing the Dolch words, as well as, writing. At this point, they are expected to have mastered all of the letters and their sounds. They also need to be able to recognize and write numbers to 20, as well as, count the numbers to 50.
During the 4th quarter, the students will have to be able to count to one hundred by ones and tens, as well as, master their addition and subtraction facts to five! If your child has mastered these math skills, you can challenge them by having them skip count by twos and add and subtract to ten. This is part of the Common Core curriculum from New York State. Please help your child get a jump start by reviewing math and ELA skills on a nightly basis. The children are certainly capable of accomplishing these goals. You can do it, Kiddos!
Thanks,
Mrs. Johnson & Ms. Ehmann

Second Grade News!
Congratulations to all of you who participated in P.A.R.P. It was interesting and exciting to see everyone participate in all of the unique activities while reaching their reading goals.
Math skills this month are focusing on time and money. We’ve moved on from three digit addition and subtraction. We need to make sure we stay sharp with this skill since it will sneak back up on us every once in awhile.
We continue to move through all of our reading and writing skills!
It’s not all hard work though. We do have some fun, too....

Fifth Grade News!
In social studies our fifth graders will begin to learn about the Civil War. Throughout this unit, students will participate in many hands-on activities including: writing secret letters, a Harriet Tubman Web Hunt, and an Internet challenge. Students will also read several pieces of literature that allow us to better understand what life was like for slaves. We will move on to discover the causes of the Civil War and key people during this time in history.
In reading, our fifth graders are enjoying Fantasy Book Clubs. Each day we are excited to meet with our groups to discuss our reading.
In science, students have been gathering data for their planet travel brochures. Using facts they have learned about a planet of choice, students will advertise the superlatives of their world.
Fifth graders have a lot of fun coming up. In May, we will be visiting the middle school and meeting the 5th graders from all of the schools. Next year, they will be our classmates!
The beginning of June brings the Bronx Zoo. They have lions, and tigers, and bears! And gorillas. And elephants. And komodo dragons…. We can’t wait!
