Jefcoed Continues the Re-Opening of School Process This Week

Pending some change, this week marks the last week of fully "remote" learning for Corner Middle School students as we prepare to transition back into the classroom for the 2020-2021 school year! Students in grades K-4 will report to Bagley this week as part of the district's Re-Opening of Schools Plan, before the students in grades 5-8 and 9-12 return to CMS and CHS on Monday, October 5th. We are so looking forward to that date!

Dr. Walter Gonsoulin, Superintendent of Jefferson County Schools, addressed the updated re-opening of schools and other related topics on Friday in the video below.

Dr. G's September 25th Update
For students in grades 5-8 who will return on October 5th, we want to remind you that you will stay on the Odd/Even Day schedule that you have been following for the past three weeks.

This week we will update CMS families each day of the week so that we do not overwhelm anyone with "information overload" on one day. Please look for information in a Weekly Buzz Update each day this week on the following topics to assist our families:

Monday, September 28th: Health Services Information (Preparing for a Safe Return to School)

Tuesday, September 29th: Transportation Information (Coming to and Going Home from School)

Wednesday, September 30th: Instructional Information (Navigating the Two-Week Hybrid Period)

Thursday, October 1st: Instructional Information (Successful Traditional and Remote School Days)

Friday, October 2nd: Instructional Information (Academic Progress and My Student in the First Quarter)

Saturday, October 3rd: Policy and Procedure Information (Dress Code, Cell Phones, and the Code of Conduct)

Please look for those updates this week and for more information about the Re-Opening of Schools in The Weekly Buzz next Sunday. In the meantime, please continue to work hard in the remote setting. We are using the regular REMOTE LEARNING SCHEDULE for this week. Please contact the school at 205-379-3230 or 205-379-3231 with any technical questions. Our Help Desk is open from 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM.

Future Problem Solvers Kicking off Competition Season

Coaches Lindsey Hoggle (5th and 6th Grade) and Jennifer Harris (7th and 8th Grade) are seeking students interested in participating on the CMS Future Problem Solvers Teams for the 2020-2021 school year.
  • FPS is a highly-competitive academic program that challenges students to think creatively, critically, and futuristically. Students work in think-tank teams of four and analyze issues facing society today and in the future using a six-step creative problem-solving process. Students target, solve, and create action plans for problems in writing, and also showcase their work in competition presentations both virtually and face-to-face.

Any student in grades 5 through 8 interested in participating this year should complete the interest form that can be found at the link below:

Mid-Nine Week Progress Reports Go Out This Week

Mid-Nine Week Progress Reports for the first quarter of the school year will go out this week via email to the email address that families put on file during the registration process. CMS families, please review this with your student then go to the parent Schoology portal and look for overdue/incomplete work assigned during the remote learning period. I have seen dozens of emails to kids and families, social media posts, and Schoology posts reminding students and their families of incomplete work and failure to participate in online classes (non-technology issue related).

This first progress report is a good barometer that will hopefully prompt some action in picking oneself up by the bootstraps and getting serious about school for the year. If you have any questions, please contact the teacher or an administrator. Thank you!

How Can We Help You?

Ms. Chloe Whitaker, counselor at Corner Middle School, has created a Needs Assessment that families can complete if you need any assistance in the days ahead. Please click on the link to find that form.

Quote of the Week . . .

"I think the truth of the matter is, people who end up as 'first' don't actually set out to be first. They set out to do something they love, and it just so happens they are the first to do it."

--Condoleezza Rice (Alabama Native and United States Secretary of State)--
