Weekly Update

Friday, November 27th, 2020

Dear Families,

We would like to begin our communication this week with a staffing update: Mrs. Nancy Krampitz has accepted our Assistant Office Administrator position, and will begin officially on Monday. We are very excited to have her join our team! A huge thank you to Mrs. Lemery, who has been with us since the beginning of the school year as the hiring process was completed. Mrs. Lemery: you will be missed and we are grateful for how you supported our students, staff and families.

A huge thank you to our Parent Council who provided all of the teaching staff with portable microphones to wear when doing whole-group lessons and activities: this will be extremely helpful in reducing the strain on the teachers' vocal cords from trying to project their voices through the masks, as well as ensuring that students hear their teachers' voices clearly. What a supportive gesture!

We are trying to creatively "be together" as a school and community while we continually work hard to have distance to stay healthy and safe. To support our sense of community and togetherness, we have a special invitation to extend to all of our families: we are creating a slideshow of pictures to share what different families in our school community do when they are together. The pictures could showcase one of your family's special traditions or a celebration that is part of your culture or heritage, or just a lovely picture of your family all together. It can be an activity you engage in at this time of year, or any other time of the year that is personally meaningful to you. The pictures that are sent will be combined and shared to our school community through our weekly updates. Thank you in advance for any pictures submitted. We are grateful to be part of an incredible community and look forward to seeing pictures of us #StrongerTogether. Please send all pictures to daveyjk@limestone.on.ca, and our slideshow will be shared prior to the December break.

A gentle reminder to all families that it is really important that your children are here on time: when children arrive late to school, they are missing important daily welcoming routines, instructional time and learning. Please ensure that your children are lined up and ready to enter the school with their classmates at 9:15 each day. Similarly, if you need to pick up your child early for an appointment, please ensure that you have communicated this with the homeroom teacher, so that your child can be ready and waiting at the main office, and the office staff do not have to disrupt learning by paging students down through the PA System. Thank you for your support.

November was Indigenous Education Month. While we include Indigenous content and teaching throughout the whole year, there was a special focus and some wonderful learning about Indigenous Peoples who have made important contributions to our country. We also had a Knowledge Keeper, Tim Yearington (Grey Thunderbird) come to teach some of our Junior and Intermediate teachers about the Medicine Wheel: this was wonderful learning, with a focus on wellness and finding balance. He will be returning to teach some of the classes in the month of December, and we look forward to these special visits.

And last, but not least....some very important and exciting Parent Council reminders: the amazing "Mom's Pantry" fundraiser is on! Detailed information is below. And if you have not already done so, please ensure that you have placed an order for your child's free Hawks t-shirt! If your order is not received by Monday, November 30th, Parent Council will order a default size based upon your child's grade level. Detailed information is provided below.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mme Peart & Mrs. Davey

School Council Information/Mom's Pantry Fundraiser Information

The School Council has done a great deal of research to find a fundraiser that provides contact-free delivery, is healthy and amazing and has decided to partner with "Mom's Pantry!" Please see detailed information below. **Please note that due to restrictions with COVID-19, we are unable to commit to Group Pick up orders. You MUST select products that can be delivered to your home, by selecting “Fundraiser Order (From Afar). This will allow for individual shipping. Only “dry” products (i.e. not frozen or fresh) are available for order at this time.**

Our next School Council meeting will be on January 14th, 2021 from 6:45-8:45. We anticipate that the meeting will be held virtually, and will send out information for parents & guardians who would like to join in January.

Fridays have been declared Henderson Hawk Pride Day!

We have decided that EVERY Friday will be a Henderson Hawks Spirit Day! On Fridays, slip on some green and yellow clothing, footwear or accessories, and show how proud you are to be a Hawk!

COVID-19 Daily Active Screening

All students, staff, bus drivers, bus monitors and visitors to schools must perform a daily self-assessment for symptoms of COVID-19 before each school day and before putting students on a school bus. Staying home when sick is important to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and other viruses in our community.

COVID-19 Screening Tool

Parents and caregivers must review the following checklist with their child/student before sending them to school each day and before putting them on a school bus.

Please use the online COVID-19 School Screening Tool available in English and French (released October 1, 2020). You can print or download this version in English or French (by clicking on the top right). We are working on translations in additional languages. This new screening tool replaces what was provided previously (Sept. 21, 2020 version).

James R Henderson Parking Guide

Drop off and pick up times are very busy, and we want to ensure the safety of all of our students and their caregivers as they enter and exit the school. Please consult the Driving and Parking Guide below to see where there are safe, designated parking spaces that are all within a 3 minute walk to the school. The area directly in front of the school is a designated student drop off zone: you must remain in your vehicle and are permitted to stop for a maximum of 3 minutes. A reminder that parking is not permitted on the shoulder of Roosevelt Drive opposite the school, and that the City of Kingston will be enforcing this no-parking zone. Thank you for ensuring that you help to keep everyone safe by respecting our drop-off and parking guidelines.
