Principal's Message
Happy February and Semester 2!
Grades have been completed and posted and we are on to the 2nd semester of the 2023-24 school year! Hard to believe how fast things have been going. Last Friday we had our second after school rec night that was well attended and gave our students and staff a great opportunity to play some sports and games in a nice warm gym, see pictures below.
In this edition of the Hawk Nation you will also find a special note from our counselors regarding schedules for next year including to our eighth graders who will be moving on to high school.
Coming up on February 13 will be our last Family Learner conference of the year. These will be organized as drop ins like the first two we had earlier in the year.
Lastly, a focus for our building includes getting to class on time, we expect our learners to carry their planner, binder, and charged iPad with them to all classes. Having these three things allows for your child to come to class prepared and on time to learn. If your child has lost or damaged their planner we have more available in the main office for $5. Our planners are used to record the learning of the day, due dates, and also used as our pass system so these are very important to have. Please check your child's binder to see how it is holding up. Some may need to be updated as many have seen a lot of usage.
Let's make it a great Semester 2!

It's that time again....Parent-Teacher Conferences are coming up!
They will be held on February 13th, from 3:30 to 6:00 pm, and will be in an open-house format. No need to sign up! Core subject/House teachers will be in the cafeteria and encore (elective) teachers will be in the gym. Stop in when you can and see whichever teachers you wish.
Hope to see you there!
Course Selection for the 2024-25 School Year
Hello Horning Families!
While second semester has just begun, we are right in the thick of course selections for the 24-25 school year! Course selection occurs at this time of year so that we can accurately attain every students preferences allowing us to best prepare for necessary class sections and staffing to be able to meet those requests. We always do our best to get students as many of their top choices as possible and that work begins with proper course selection on their part.
As counselors we have now visited all students at Horning through classroom presentations to provide students information on available courses, insight on how to choose the best courses for them and the paperwork needed to make those selections.
We presented to our 8th graders the week of January 16th with a follow up presentation and support from some of our high school counselors that same week. Course selection sheets for high school were distributed on January 18th. Those sheets were due on January 26th.
Presentations for our 6th and 7th graders took place in classrooms last week Thursday and Friday and course selection sheets were sent home the day of the presentation. All 6th and 7th grade course selection sheets are due by this Friday, February 2nd.
We were also able to visit all of Horning’s feeder elementary schools, finishing up this Monday. It was great to meet all our future 6th graders! All music choice sheets and course selection sheets are due by February 2nd and can be returned to the students’ elementary homeroom teacher.
Below we have provided links to the presentations that were used as well as the course descriptions and selection sheets that were provided. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions you may still have!

Student Supply Refresh
Second semester is underway and now is a great time to refresh your student's school supplies. Many kids run low on the items needed to be successful in the classroom this time of year. Pencils are one thing we see that are often gone by now and many students' binders are simply falling apart. Please check in with your child to see what he/she needs. Let's start the second semester strong and prepared for class!
Speaking of being prepared, all students at Horning are learning important organization skills, not only with their materials but with time as well. Student agendas serve as a place to record class and/or homework and important due dates. At Horning, agendas are also used as hall passes. If your child is without an agenda, please ensure he/she gets a new one. Replacements are available in the office for $5.
We appreciate your help in making sure your child has all the tools needed to be successful in the second half of the year. Horning teachers and administrators thank you!

All students will begin the day with Advisory and receive instruction in all four core academic areas each day of the week
Each class with be 44 minutes in length with the exception of blocked ELA and Math which will be double that time
Attendance and Electronics Reminders
Attendance:
Attendance is extremely important.
Our school wide expectation is that every student is arriving to their scheduled class on time prior to the start of class bell. This will ensure that active learning time is maximized and students are receiving the best learning environment possible.
Students have 3 minutes to transition from one class to the next. This time should be used to prepare for their upcoming class.
Students are able to access their lockers before school, before lunch, after lunch, and at the end of the school day. Students should be utilizing these opportunities to prepare themselves for their early/late classes.
Please do your best to make sure that your technology (iPad) is charged and ready to go at the start of the day. This will ensure classroom time is maximized for learning.
Cell Phone:
The School District of Waukesha has in place a cell phone policy that requires cell phones to be placed in their locker upon entering the school building. The phone should be turned off and left in their locker until they leave at the end of the school day.
Thank you all for helping support us in a successful school year. Working together we can accomplish great things.
