SPELLING

Due to STAAR testing next week, we will not be introducing new concepts. Students can use the extra time to work toward the 25 Book Challenge......the deadline is Thursday.

Science News

This week in science the students have been studying about plants and animal adaptations. They have learned that plants, like animals, have some interesting adaptations to help them survive in their environments.

READING

We have been brushing up on our reading strategies in preparation for Tuesday's STAAR test. Many students made slide shows, stories, and posters to emphasize what strategies work best. Ask your reader what strategies help them to better comprehend. Also, ask your reader how many times he/she should read a paragraph, question, or answer choice. The answer should be, "as many times as it takes to truly understand it." We have been stressing the importance of finding "text evidence" and liken it to finding treasure or gold (Good readers will keep on diggin' until they find it.) Thanks for supporting us all year long by ensuring that your child is reading on a regular basis.

Note about 25 Book Challenge: The deadline is Thursday, May 12. How close is your reader?

TEXAS HISTORY

This week we read about another industry important to Texas....the railroad industry. They learned about how the railroad "boom" affected the growth of Texas in many ways.

MATH NEWS

This week students used detective skills to "shine their light" and hunt for information. They know that sometimes you have to read a problem more than once to figure it out. They loved being able to solve their mysteries using their problem solving skills!

On Monday, students will show what they know on the math STAAR test. Please talk with your child about taking their time, reading carefully, and showing their work to solve problems. We want everyone to be well rested and eat breakfast to start their testing day strong and energized! Thanks for all your support!
