Save the Slaves

Social effects of Slavery
The African slave trade deprived the African population of 16 million. West African societies, between Senegal and Angola were especially close to slave ports so they had a higher chance of being enslaved. Sex ratio of males to females was greatly impacted. Two thirds of the slaves were male. Angola had a 2:3 population of females to males.
Political effects
Political effects were that internally slave empires would trade their people for weapons. They used these weapons force other slaves for trade. It was a misconception about Europeans being the ones capturing the Africans, it was actually the African empires themselves.
Plantation system
Spanish colonies started the first plantation in 1516 in Hispaniola. Sugar was a huge cash crop but indigo, rice, and tobacco soon raised just as much money as sugar. The plantation system was mainly based of physical labor from the slaves.
Resistance
Due to the poor conditions of slavery, the slaves often rebelled. They would rebel by working slowly or sabotaging equipment. Sometimes slaves would run away and meet together to form a society that self governs. The biggest resistance was the Slave Resistance which was when the slaves outnumbered the amount of owners.
