WANTED
ASSEF
CHARGED FOR:
-For the emotional, mental and physical damage he caused people
-Using his brass knuckles for no good when he was not pleased
-Harassing and assaulting people
-For being Hassan and Sohrab's Rapist
-Hurting Amir severely over something stupid
-For being part of a group called the "Taliban"
Emotional/Mental/Physical Damage
He was very racist against Hassan for being a Hazara. He wanted all the Hazara's eliminated because that was his idea of a perfect country, he was also a Hitler fan and he liked the way Hitler thought so he used Hitler as a role model.
"..."Too late for Hitler," he said. "But not for us"...", that was Assef speaking about his vision of Afghanistan only being the land of Pashtuns and not the Hazara on page 40.
Assef tried to hurt Amir, but he didn't get to do it until later on in life. He did hurt Hassan though, it is a huge impact in the story. He kept his promise of getting them both back.
Brass Knuckles
Assef thought Amir was a disgrace because if he was with Hassan that was going against Assef's vision, "You're part of the problem, Amir. If idiots like you and your father didn't take these people in, we'd be rid of them by now. They'd all just go rot in Hazarajat where they belong. You're a disgrace to Afghanistan." (Page 41) Luckily Hassan was there to save Amir and they escape, other wise Amir would've been severely hurt because Assef's intentions were to hurt him.
Page 41, "I looked in his crazy eyes and saw that he meant it. He really meant to hurt me. Assef raised his fist and came for me. There was a flurry of rapid movement behind me. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Hassan bend down and stand up quickly.....I turned and came face to face with Hassan's slingshot." This was when Hassan saved him from the beating he was going to receive.
Harassing and Assaulting
Assef is guilty of harassment because every where he goes he picks on people and carries "disciples", his supposedly friends, to help him do the dirty work.
Hassan's Rape & Example of Physical/Mental/Emotional Damage
Hassan, Amir, Assef, and Assef's friends had all met before, but Hassan and Amir escaped because Hassan had his slingshot and he threat Assef of using it. So when Hassan went after Amir's blue kite from the kite tournament, Assef went after him to get that revenge. Assef was going to let him go, but only for a cost and that cost was the blue kite. Hassan was loyal so he didn't want to give it up so Assef raped him, he even gave Hassan a second chance, but he declined the offer.
"Assef knelt behind Hassan, put his hands on Hassan's hips and lifted his bare buttocks. He kept one hand on Hassan's back and undid his own belt buckle with his free hand. He unzipped his jeans. Dropped his underwear. He positioned himself behind Hassan. Hassan didn't struggle. Didn't even whimper. He moved his head slightly and I caught a glimpse of his face. Saw the resignation in it. It was the look I had seen before. It was the look of the lamb." (Page 75-76) This explains how Assef did it and how Hassan being helpless, didn't do anything.
Page 70-76 explain everything.
I used Hassan as the example of all the damage Assef made because I think he suffered the most.
Sohrab's Abuse and Rape
"..."Bia, Bia, my boy," the Talib said, calling Sohrab to him. Sohrab went to him, head down, stood between his thighs. The Talib wrapped his arms around the boy", this quote proves how miserable Sohrab was.
Assef rubbed Sohrab's belly slowly and gently, I am sure that I wouldn't want a rapist to touch me like that and even the guards laughed when Assef started to touch the poor kid, because they knew who Assef was and what he had done. (This is all on page 280)
Later on in the book Sohrab confesses to Amir what Assef had done to him, he says that he misses his parents but at the same time he doesn't because he is now dirty. He thinks he is dirty and full of sin because Assef had raped him and the two guards that were in the room were a part of it also.
"Those men---", "-they did things....the bad man and the other two...they did things...did things to me." This is Sohrab's confession of what Assef and the guards that were in the room did. (Page 319-320)
Amir's Beating
Assef and the Taliban
Women are the most affected because they aren't allowed to do anything, they can't go anywhere without being with a male of their family or without their husband knowing and they have to do what ever their husband says, even if they don't want to and worse things. They have severely strict rules and they basically have all their rights taken.
In the book Assef is trying to get rid of the Hazara, this is similar to the Taliban now.
More similarities of the book and real life:
-Men have to grow beard and women have to be all covered, in the book if they didn't follow the rules they would've been killed or severely hurt.
-Women getting stoned for committing adultery, in the book a women and a man were blind folded and stoned to death for committing adultery.
-Kite flying band, in the book kite flying was important to people, it's like any important sport in America.
-Harsh and forced laws that violate the rights of others, man cannot bring justice by their own hand like these people do/did by stoning adulterers. That's not hurting anyone at all, it is emotionally, but you can't really do anything about it. You can only leave it to God for him to handle because it's not a real crime happening in real life. It's just a sin, a sin in God's eyes.
