The Principal’s Corner
Greetings Oakleigh Families,
We are well into the third marking period and I want to express how proud I am of our students. Recent MAP assessments show that the majority of our students have made significant gains this year! Our teachers have been closely monitoring data, making instructional adjustments, and encouraging students. Our students have been setting goals, working hard, and persevering. Our year is not over; we have much more learning to do. Students will continue to need great attendance and focus. Thank you for your continued support!
We have other growth happening, too. If you have been in or even near the school, you have seen that construction relating to our air conditioning project is in full swing. At this point, the project is progressing on schedule. All work inside the building is happening during the evening hours and there has been minimal impact for students.
I hope to see you at our Reading Night at Parkville Library on March 2nd.
Best regards,
Mrs. Mason

PTA UPDATES!
Hello Oakleigh Families,
Spring is almost here and it feels like this year is flying by so quickly. The PTA has some exciting events coming up:
Our Family Bingo Night is scheduled for Friday, March 31st at Pine Grove Middle. Tickets are only $5/person. If you know anyone who has a direct-sales business and would like to be a vendor at this event, contact Katia at bingovendors@oakleighpta.org for more information.
Oakleigh is headed back to Camden Yards this year on Friday, May 19th. Flyers will be sent home soon. FYI...it’s a Fireworks Night!
Keep an eye out for Yearbook order forms.
PTA Nominations – The PTA is seeking nominations for next year’s Board of Directors. If you are interested in any of the Officer positions (President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary), please contact me at president@oakleighpta.org. If we don’t have these positions filled, Oakleigh won’t have a PTA next year. Many people don’t realize what the PTA does for our students and staff. In addition to hosting wonderful family events, the PTA funds many assemblies, programs (like the PBIS prizes), and field trips.
Meetings are the 1st Tuesday of the Month at 5:30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Happy Spring,

Kindergarten News
Our 100th Day of School was a fantastic celebration! Kindergarten students celebrated in many ways! The children enjoyed counting to one hundred. Thank you for participating in various ways at Oakleigh. The children are one hundred days smarter!
In Reading and Science the students are learning about changes in weather and the seasons. The students will be conducting hot and cold experiments using sand and light. Students will continue to use reading strategies such as re-reading, predicting and sequencing information in order to understand the text.
In math, please continue to practice counting to one hundred. Students are creating groups up to ten and learning how to compare sets. Next, students will identify 2-D and 3-D shapes using geometry. Please continue to use dreambox at home to support your child. They can login to their BCPSOne account by going to https://bcpsone.bcps.org/. They are able to access dreambox and a variety of digital resources and databases.
Thanks,
The Kindergarten Team
1st Grade News
Happy March! In reading, our first graders are having fun reading nonfiction texts about various animals. We are determining why different animals are unique. While reading, we have been identifying key details and making connections within the text.
In math, we are finishing unit 5, which involves measurement, time to the hour and half hour, and fractions. We will soon be working on addition and subtraction story problems. Students will be playing games and completing activities to deepen their number sense. Our first graders are also enjoying our science unit, which involves plants and animals.
Again, we continue to encourage parents to give students time to work on dreambox at home. They can login to their BCPSOne account by going to https://bcpsone.bcps.org/. They are able to access their lesson tiles, dreambox, and a variety of digital resources and databases.
Thanks,
The First Grade Team
3rd Grade News
It’s hard to believe that the fourth quarter is steadily approaching us! The final quarter of third grade will be busy with end of the year activities and our field trip scheduled for March 30, 2017. Third graders will be using their Language Arts and Social Studies knowledge as they will be viewing a play entitled “Dance Across Cultures”. Students will be listening to folk tales, songs, and personal stories all about Brazil. We are so excited!
During our next Science unit, Safe Racer, the students will work in cooperative groups to design and create a car out of recycled materials. A grade level race will be conducted and a winner will be chosen. Be on the lookout for important details coming home regarding supplies that students can bring in to help construct their vehicles. Fractions will continue to be our focus in Math, which is then followed by computation with all operations, geometry, and measurement.
In ELA we have been learning about inventions and innovations. Talk to your child about his or her favorite invention. As we approach our unit on historical perspectives, be on the lookout for information about our family timeline project. Continue to read every night!
As a last friendly reminder, as the weather changes, please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for school each day. Closed toed shoes must be worn to ensure safety on the playground equipment. Students are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle which they can take to and from school on a daily basis. This will help keep them hydrated and cut down on the trips into the building for water breaks.
The Third Grade Team values and appreciates your continued support!
