This Week in Band at PMMS (May 9-13, 2016)

New Information

Happy Mother's Day

OK...let's face it, moms are the best! Thank you mothers everywhere! Hope you are out enjoying this beautiful day.

All The Way To State!

Congratulations to Kallan Engleson and Anastasia Rockman who participated in the State Solo/Ensemble Festival at UW-Whitewater this past weekend. Kallan performed a piano solo, mallet solo and mallet/flute duet. Anastasia did the duet as well as her flute solo. To qualify for State SE a student must perform a class A (hardest level) piece of music from the WSMA list at a very high level. Making it to State is an amazing accomplishment for students this age.

**We also learned this week that Anastasia received a perfect score on her flute solo and received an "Exemplary Soloist Award" (each adjudicator only gives a few out!)

Congratulations Anastasia and Kallan!

Memorial Day Parade Information - Monday, May 30

Band in the United States started as marching bands (specifically, military marching bands). It is part of our heritage and a great experience for young musicians. On Monday, May 30 we get the opportunity to pay tribute to our veterans and our nation by marching in the Memorial Day Parade. **This is a mandatory event for 7th Grade Band Members who are in town. 6th Graders are not required to march, but can if they are interested.

**We understand that this is a holiday and that many families have plans out of town, etc. We do not expect you to change your family's plans. However, if you are in town it is important to have your child participate. If your child cannot attend please send Chris an email: cpgleas@sunprairieschools.org or a written note by May 13th.

Here are the specifics:

Time? Parade Starts at 10:00 AM. All band members need to report to the main entrance

area of CHUMS by 9:30 AM.

Route? The parade begins at CHUMS and ends at Walker/Main Street near the Public Library. Parents please meet us in Public Library Rear Parking Lot immediately after the parade! We recommend that parents park in the rear parking lot of the library and walk back up the parade to see/hear the band.

Uniform? Black Band shirt, black pants, black socks and shoes (no shorts)

Important! Remember to leave instrument case in your parent’s car when you meet at CHUMS. You will just need your assembled instrument.

Help Needed: We usually have 8-10 parents walking with the band during the parade. We will have some water/gatorade at the end of the parade for the kids, but if it is a warm day we might do a quick water break along the way as well. If interested in helping send Chris an email.

School Instrument Turn-in Day

All school instruments and supplies need to be returned to the PMMS Band Room no later than Tuesday, May 31. We need to inventory all of the school owned instruments on this day.

Summer Band Opportunities! Registration Open

We feel any of these opportunities offer a tremendous experience for students both musically and socially. Summer camps are a great way to keep playing, meet new friends, and work with an expert on your own instrument.

· There are a variety of band camps in the area and across the state. The UW-W band camp is exceptional and highly recommended by Mr. Gleason and Mrs. Haraldson.

· If you would like information on other camps, just let us know (but this is the best!)

Many camps have a commuter option, which reduces the cost of attending quite a bit. Check the web sites for details. Students returning from camp rave about the great time they had. They learn an incredible amount of information in a short period. The instructors are eager to share their knowledge and love for music.
