Thoughts from Dr. Voelkl

If you had asked me to articulate my goals for this school year as we entered into the summer months I would have responded, "survival." As we moved through our first couple of weeks of school this goal statement shifted slightly to "continue to survive." At present, I would go so far as to say that my goal statement has shifted to, "I want Saint Charles Borromeo...our students, our faculty, our staff, and our families to thrive." Thus, the focus and scope of our work is evolving to meet this goal. As parents, I would venture to say that many have gone through the same process. We wanted to ensure the basic needs of our family and children continued to be met. Personally, I wanted my children to be fed, clothed and loved. I wanted them to be ok. As I have watched and observed so many of our students move through their school days it is apparent that they are eager and capable of learning, thinking deeply, interacting with new knowledge, and growing in countless ways. Typically, at our back to school nights I ask all parents to reflect on and articulate their hopes, wishes and dreams for each of their children for the school year. We may be a bit behind in the process but now that we have successfully "survived", it is exciting to look upward and move onward in collaborating and working together as teachers, parents and students to plan, act and achieve. THANK YOU for sharing your children with us. We look forward to continuing on this journey with you!!!

Please see the flyer and open the links below for important updates related to this year's events!
Big picture

Virtual Learning When Your Child is Home

With the dawn of Virtual Learning it has become much easier for students who are home to still "participate" in class. A few reminders related to this process ~

1. Your child may be able to join in class but depending on what materials they brought home with them may not be able to complete all of the work.

2. The links to participate in their classes can be found in their google classrooms. Students in higher grade levels i.e. 5th grade and up will be able to "join" in with a greater level of independence than some of our younger kiddos. In other words, most should know where to go and what to do :-)

3. Teachers are always happy and eager to help but may not be able to respond to an email first thing in the morning to walk through the process as they are preparing to start their school day. We may be able to help facilitate this process from the office but cannot guarantee we will be able to do so as soon as class starts.

4. As we have continued to move through this hybrid/virtual model we continue to LEARN and GROW more and more each day. As I have told our teachers I think we might be pretty amazing at this by next year. In other words, we are all continuing to research, practice, make new mistakes, collaborate, learn and share. These practices will lead to tremendous growth but never perfection.

5. If your child does log in and participate in class they are marked as Virtually Learning for that day and NOT marked simply as absent. If they are capable and able PLEASE have them join in.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED PATIENCE! If you are a "true" virtual family I will be sending a google form link shortly to help all of us continue to reflect on our practices.

A note from Fr. Dotson:

Our school is blessed with a wonderful faculty and staff that do so much for the sake of our children.

This year, they are facing even more challenges than usual. As a school family, one of the best ways that we can support them is by prayer. We are asking every school family to choose one day during the school year in which they will pray for our faculty and staff in a very particular and intentional way.

The goal is to have every school day covered between now and the end of the school year, so that our faculty and staff know that they are covered by our prayers every day as they serve our children. To help with this, we have created a Signup Genius here: Each family is asked to sign up for at least one date. There can be more than one family on a date. Please help us with our goal of having every day filled. Our faculty and staff do so much, and this is a beautiful way for us to support them and show them our thanks.

In Christ,

Fr. William Dotson

You may have noticed that the side of 5th street adjacent to the school has now been ZONED A NO PARKING AREA from 6:00 am until 6:30 pm Monday through Friday. Our HOPE is that this will help alleviate congestion during morning drop-off and ensure student safety during parent pick-up. For those of us whose vehicles have paid the price of parking here perhaps we are saving another car or two in the process as well :-)

As we continue to move through this process we continue to grow, learn and evolve. At this time having gone through the experience of doing some contact tracing, speaking with representatives at the health department and reviewing policy from other area Catholic and public schools we are tightening up our MASK policy a bit. Moving forward for the time being students in grades 2nd and up will be asked to keep their masks on during the school day while in the building within the classroom. Our goals in response to COVID remain two keep our students and faculty safe and keep our students and faculty present in school. This policy will go a long way toward helping us achieve this goal. The students have been doing AN AMAZING JOB in this area and at this time typically have their masks on most of the time without realizing it is even there. THANK YOU for your continued support!

How do I add money to my lunch account?

For now, these are the ways that you can put money on your shared family lunch account. Due to Covid, we would prefer not to handle checks or Cash. We would prefer that you use Paypal, but you will be charged a fee unless you mark them as a "friend" or "personal". I am not sure exactly what it says, but do not choose them as a business otherwise you will be charged a fee. The fee will not show up until it is entered into the lunch account. If you give FSC $20 as a business, the fee will be taken out and the remainder will be added to your account. AS ALWAYS, PLEASE PUT YOUR STUDENTS NAME IN THE MEMO!!!! It is very difficult to add money to an account especially if the PayPal account name doesn't match a name at our school.

1) Send in a check made out to FSC with the students names in the memo

2) PREFERRED METHOD: Use PayPal (make them a "friend") and put into account Be sure to put students name in the memo

3) Send in cash. Put in a sealed envelope with students name(s) clearly marked.

How do I check my child's lunch balance?

Sign into FACTS:

go to "My Accounting"

then to "Cafeteria"

then to " Account"

Once you click on account, you can see what your children are purchasing.

Please check FACTS for the menu. The OCTOBER menu will be added today.
