February 2018
Monthly Theme: Perseverance
Principal's Message
Greetings Fir Grove Families!
February is a month to practice perseverance and students are fully engulfed in learning.
Recently, there has been uptick in students coming to my office, and that is a good thing! Students are coming to be recognized for their reading achievement. When students pass a reading level, they get to pick out a new book, get a ribbon, and have their photo added to the Wall of Fame. Novels, fiction and non-fiction books, and graphic novels are all waiting for new homes. There are many excited faces throughout the day in the Principal's Office.
It's really the highlight of my day to talk to kids about their learning and to see them choose a book of their own. Ask your student if they've visited my office yet.
Spring Conferences are coming on February 28th and March 1st. I encourage all families to make the time to attend. Teachers will have so much information to share about learning, academics and behavior. It is also a good time to ask questions! Your presence shows your child that you care about their education and think it is important. We can't be as successful at school without your support at home.
More conference information will come home soon. We will be using an online conference sign up form like we did last year.
Lastly, we will end the month with a Fir Grove School-Wide Spirit Week! All students voted and the results are in. It should be a fun three days!

Report Cards Are Coming Home February 9th
Beginning with this current school year, elementary schools moved from a trimester progress reporting calendar to a semester reporting calendar. This is consistent with middle schools and high schools. All levels will report student progress to parents four times per year. For elementary schools, this will be during spring and fall conferences and at the end of each semester (February and June). Secondary schools will report in November, February, April and June. Students will carry report cards home on Feb 9th. If you selected an electronic report card, it will become visible in ParentVue after 4:00 on Friday, the 9th.
Please see below for how proficiency is rated.

Music Notes
Thanks to our Library Media Assistant, Mrs. Donnelly, there’s a new music book in the library available for checkout! It’s a beautifully illustrated version of an old English folksong called The Tailor and the Mouse.
Students in Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 3rd grade will recognize it immediately as I have covered this song with all of them in recent years. The book will certainly be a popular item in the library, so if you want to sing the song but can’t wait to check it out, please visit the music room website to view a the lyrics and sing along with the recording.
