What is Color-Blindness?

Color-blindness is the inability to tell the difference between many different shades of colors. This disease is caused by an absence of pigment in the cone cells of the retina part of your eye.

Genetic Facts

  • Red-green color blindness is a sex-linked recessive trait. Blue-yellow is autosomal dominant. Red-green is located on X chromosome. Blue-yellow is not located on any particular chromosome.
  • Color-blindness is an X-linked disease and is passed on by parents to their kids. Many more men carry this disease than females due to the fact that it is X-linked.

Diagnosis and Treatments:

Diagnosis - The Hardy-Rand-Rittler and Ishihara Color Plates are used to diagnose the type and degree of color blindness. More males are affected than females. More than 3,000,000 affected each year in U.S.

Treatment - If you have inherited this trait, there is no treatment. However if it is caused by something else, you can see an Optometrist or an Ophthalmologist.

Lifestyle and Prognosis:

Lifestyle - There is a difficulty of telling difference between certain colors. Color blind people can see colors but some colors appear to be washed out.

Prognosis - Color blindness doesn’t affect the life expectancy directly. Can’t tell a difference between colors or colors of dresses which affects their social life.

  • Strongly colorblind people might only be able to tell about 20 hues apart from each other, with normal color vision this number raises to more than 100 different hues.

  • Ishihara plates are the best known color blindness tests, but they are not the most accurate ones.

  • About 8% of all men are suffering from color blindness.

  • 99% of all colorblind people are suffering from red-green color blindness.

  • In certain countries you need normal color vision to get a drivers license.

  • About 0.5% of all women are suffering from color blindness.

  • Police officer, firefighter, and airline pilot are the most famous jobs which require normal color vision.
