SBMS Band Shines at TLU Festival of Bands

All of the SBMS 6th grade band students attended the Texas Lutheran University Festival of Bands in Seguin this past Thursday. This trip is a tradition for the SBMS band program and one that all of the students look forward to. This contest consists of 45 Bands from many area schools, spread over a 3-day period. There are 2 trophies that are given out at this contest: A Participant Award and a larger Outstanding Performance Award. (The Outstanding Award is similar to receiving a 1st Division at UIL Concert and Sight Reading.) Both of SBMS groups received an Outstanding Performance Award. (SBMS took their entire group of beginners and split them down the middle into 2 groups so that everyone could fit on stage.) Both groups were also awarded the Exceptional Musicianship Award. There are only 3 of these trophies given out over the entire contest and the SBMS 6th grade band was awarded one of them for both groups! This is the first time in the history of the SBMS Band program that ANY group has won this trophy. Needless to say…this is a tremendous accomplishment for the kids, the band, and for SBMS! Congratulations on making SBMS history!

Directors are: Cody Richardson and Jeannie Reed

Final Support Service Art Show Celebrates Artistic Creativity

CISD will continue to showcase student artwork at Support Services through the summer. Last week, artists and their teachers from HLES, RCES, STZES, GFES, MVES, MVMS, CLHS, ACMECHS, and CHMS were honored at a gallery showing and reception at Support Services.

Artist, Charles Michael Reid was the guest speaker. Charles Michael Reid is a professionally-trained Studio Artist with more than 12 years of experience in the field of Visual and Communication Arts. Charles received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art from Valdosta State University in 2003 and went on to achieve the title of Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art from Texas A&M University-Commerce in 2007.

Although his studio emphasis was largely 2-D Design, Painting & Drawing during his undergraduate studies, Mr. Reid served as the Graduate Assistant to the Department of Art at Texas A&M University-Commerce from 2004-2007, and quickly became conversant in multi-media and installation-oriented approaches to art-making. From 2007-2010, Mr. Reid was the Artist in Residence at Departure Art Centre in London, England, teaching studio art classes, managing the gallery spaces and creating his own expansive body of work for domestic and international exhibitions. Prior to leaving the UK, Charles served as Gallery Director of House Gallery and his solo exhibition, A World of Words, was sponsored by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and the Director of Mile End Park.

Since 2011, Mr. Reid has worked as Visual Artist & Design Consultation for Battelle Memorial Institute, providing graphic design consultation and product development for multiple State, Government and Commercial clients in both the US and abroad.

In 2013, Mr. Reid founded ASAH Creative Studios in Spring Branch Texas, where he currently lives and resides with his wife, Kimberly, and two sons, Judah and Isaiah.
