Bulldog Bulletin
August 25, 2017
Dear Bulldog Families,
We have just successfully completed our second FULL week of school. As I walk into classrooms, chat with students at recess, and assist students in the cafeteria, I am astonished at the learning that is already taking place! Teachers are “launching” Readers’ and Writers' Workshop, continuing with the groundwork of actively involving students in a reading and writing life. Mathematicians are being stretched in some new ways as we incorporate our new Everyday Math resource that uses a spiraling curriculum to assist us in addressing the Indiana Standards. This spiraling framework means that learning is spread out over time rather than being concentrated in shorter periods, like our traditional units of study. In a spiral curriculum, material is revisited repeatedly over months and across grades. Spiraling leads to better long-term mastery of facts, skills, and concepts.
We are continuing with our vision depicted by the (revised) HSE21 Best Practices for Teaching and Learning infographic. The vision is to prepare students for the future by focusing on student-centered approaches, content and curriculum, transfer of learning, and fundamental classroom conditions. Reflection is an ongoing and integral component of this model. Teachers set individual goals for their work within this framework, and our Professional Learning Community time spent on Mondays allows them the opportunity to collaborate as grade level teams to support student learning and set the conditions for optimal growth. We appreciate your support and flexibility with this early-release time on Mondays!
Your students are hopefully adjusting well to the school schedule, but I am sure they are tired from our second full week of learning and growing. As always, thank you for partnering with us in education. Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Lori Mankin

Remember to bring your boxed uncooked pasta into school 8/31 through 9/8 and place them in the specially marked PastaBowl bins.

*** Handbook Highlights ***
Each Bulldog Bulletin will highlight a portion of the New Britton Student Handbook. This month's focus is Textbook Rental and Fees.
The textbook rental and fees statements HAVE NOT been posted to your student's Skyward account yet; therefore we cannot accept textbook rental or iPad rental fees at this point. We would expect HSE Schools Administration to post the textbook rental information to your student's account within the next 2 weeks. You will receive an email notifying you that book rental & fees are live on Skyward and may now be paid. Fees can be paid in several ways:
1. Efunds - this online payment method is quick and easy. Payment can be made with credit or debit card using the Quicklink section on the NBE website or click HERE.
2. Check or cash - these can accepted at NBE office between 9:00 and 3:00 p.m.
