Writing Workshop
Students will be fine tuning their handwriting while practicing various skills in their books. First, they will use a word bank to label different instruments. This give the students an opportunity copy words and ensure accuracy in the process. In addition, they will practice writing dates using abbreviations with a punctuation. Next week, they will put all of these skills together to write a personal thank you letter.
As a class, the students will practice strategies to help them continue to develop their writing voice. They will use their natural and detailed verbal stories as a foundation for writing with a stronger voice. Using the power of listening, they will recognize dialogue, thoughts, proper nouns, and onomatopoeia in their verbal stories.
Math
10+0=10, 9+1=10, 8+2=10, 7+3=10, 6+4=10, 5+5=10. Below are some strategies the students will be introduced to in upcoming weeks.
Add tens then subtract the extra ones strategy
- The first step was for the students to focus on the single digit and understand that +8 is the same as 10-2
- The second step was for the students to add 10 to double digit numbers then subtract 2
- For example: 86 + 7 = _____________
- The bond for 7 is 7 + 3= 10 so +7 is the same as +10 - 3
- Add 86+10= 96 and 96-3 = 93
*This strategy is used with adding a 3-digit number to a single digit number
Add the ones strategy
- The first step is for the students to separate the ones from the hundreds and tens
- 354 + 5 = __________
- For example 354 becomes 350 and 4
- Then add the ones, 5 + 4 = 9
- and 350 + 9 + 359
Add tens to a 3-digit number
- Identify the number in the tens in each number and group them out
- 238 + 50 = ____________
- 208 + 30
- Then add the two double digit numbers; 50 + 30 = 80
- And add 208 + 80 = 288
