Read, Read, and Read!
April is National Poetry Month, and MJS had a fabulous visit with Newbery Medal winner and poet Kwame Alexander last week. He wowed the crowd with his passion for books, poetry, and reading. He answered many intriguing questions, shared many childhood stories, and held a hilarious book contest featuring his own titles! The biggest takeaway for students were his tips for becoming a great writer, fostering a love for reading, and getting in to poetry: read, read, and read! Sound advice, indeed.

Madrona Marsh Field Trip for Earth Day!
Friday, April 22nd is Earth Day! We are going to Madrona Marsh for our Earth Day Field Trip this Friday. This is a uniform-free day. Please make sure your child brings a waste-free lunch, is dressed appropriately for the outdoors with closed-toed shoes, has a hat, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle. Please check this week's Maywire for more information.
Joshua Tree Trip - 2 1/2 Weeks Away!
We are 2 1/2 short weeks away from the Joshua Tree Trip. Please download and review the Equipment List. Contact a Boojum Instructor if you have any questions: Lucy Hedley or Gayle Hilgris. According to Ms. Berger, there are 13 families left that need to complete the mandatory medical form. The online medical form must be submitted no later than Friday, April 22.
Yearbook Needs Your Photos!
The students in the yearbook elective are planning on putting together a digital album and need photos from the MJS community! If you have any photos taken on a camera or smart phone, please click here. You'll be taken to a page where you can upload photos to our MJS yearbook gallery and help us capture all events from April until June. If you have questions, please contact Ms. Cathy Lin (Yearbook Instructor). Thank you!
Shake Post, Issue #1: Earthquake Preparedness
The 6th graders have been working throughout the year to understand why earthquakes happen, how natural disasters shape culture and how to be prepared when an earthquake strikes. After analyzing the data gathered from surveys and interviews, they determined that creating an awareness and advocacy campaign would be the best next steps in creating a more prepared MJS community. They hope that this first installment of “Shake Post” (click link below) will lead to an important family discussion.

Raising Family Connection Through Reclaiming WhiteSpace
Thursday, April 21, 6 - 8 pm, HPAC
A family is not that different from a corporation. We want our “team” to be effective, engaged and satisfied. But like most professionals, families can feel overwhelmed by the amount of tasks that assault us every day. We are too busy to think and so are our overloaded, multitasking, screen addicted kids. In this high-energy session, Juliet Funt will help us tackle these problems by sharing some of the tools she has built for both the corporate world and families from coast to coast. We will explore how the creation of WhiteSpace - the open, unscheduled time of the day- can bring enormous creativity and connection. Lastly we explore The WhiteSpace Simplification Questions — four simple inquiries that provide endless insight and positive reframing around even the toughest individual and family overload hurdles.
Please register for the event on the parent portal. Light refreshments will be served and childcare with pizza dinner is available for $5.
