Literature-Full Year

What Comes After Foundations I? ......Foundations II!

After completing Foundations I, the next course in line is Foundations II. Foundations II, likes its precursor, is a "Literature Only" course. Although there will be writing involved, this is not a course where formal composition is taught.

Foundations II continues to teach literary analysis tools using short stories, novels, and poetry. It builds upon the skills taught in Foundations I, but bumps it up a notch. A few of the texts covered are: Wonder, QBQ, The Outsiders, selected poems, selected short stories, Gifted Hands, and Tom Sawyer.

Foundations II meets weekly for 1 hour. The cost is $350 plus supply fees. This course is for 8th grade up to 10th grade. If you have questions about this course being a "fit" for your child, I'd be glad to talk with you.

English-Fall Semester

What About Writing?....Elegant Essay Might be a Fit!

If your student has written five-paragraph essays and is looking for a composition course, I will teaching Elegant Essay for the Fall Semester.

The Elegant Essay is an advanced IEW course and assumes the student is already fluent in the basic five-paragraph model. Its goal is to go an inch wide and a mile deep into the basic essay. The course zooms in on the individual parts of a paper. In some ways it is like a lab : putting the essay under a microscope and examining all the parts.

In the "lab," students work on exercises where they practice very specific elements of the essay: thesis statements, transitions, intros, supporting arguments, etc. For example: Instead of just learning one model for an Introductory Paragraph, students learn 7 different ways to create that Introduction. It is hard, focused work, but so important to develop overall essay skill.

Elegant Essay meets weekly for 1.25 hours and is $125 for the one semester. This course is for 8th grade and up.

English-Spring Semester

Speech Boot Camp

Speech Boot Camp will be offered in the Spring Semester. Students learn the art of public speaking in a fun and safe environment. Over the course of the semester students prepare, practice, and present a series of speeches.

Speech Boot Camp meets weekly for 1.25 hours and is $125 for one semester. This course is for 8th grade and up.

What If My Child Hasn't Written 5-Paragraph Essays?

If your child has not yet written 5 paragraph essays, he or she is probably not ready for the English sections offered. However, Foundations II could still be a great fit. Please, let me know if you have any questions. I'd be glad to recommend some great writing programs or options!

Discount

If a student enrolls in all three courses, the cost is $500.
