Message From Principal Engdall
Greeting Shaw Montessori!
What an incredible parent workday in the garden we had last Saturday! About 60 parents turned out to work. The garden looks promising and bountiful with the seeds the students have sewn in the last several weeks beginning to emerge. Thank you so much for all the work both seen and unseen that you do to make this school and community as exceptional as it is.
Did you know that your child’s attendance affects our school letter grade as well as your child’s ability to fully access the full and rich Montessori curriculum? The Arizona Department of Education factors our daily attendance rate into the calculation for our school letter grade. The difference between and A or B school is a slim margin, we need all our points. Every time your students arrives late or leaves early it contributes to an escalated rate of absenteeism for our entire community and causes your child to miss important lessons or work. Moreover, when a child is expecting to be picked up early, they are not fully concentrating on a full day of learning in anticipation.
I am attaching a school calendar for your reference. Please, when possible, schedule appointments and non-emergency events for one of the many days we are not in session. I know life is full of the unexpected however, we are experiencing an enormous number of late arrivals (adult problem) and early pickups. If they can be avoided, do your part to help our school and your child thrive and perform at optimum levels.
Some of our families will be receiving CUTS (Court Unified Truancy Suppression) letters this week as a result of excessive absences. Should you receive one of these notices and have questions, please feel free to contact me: susan.engdall@phxschools.org or by phone at 602-257-4069.
Wishing you a restful and fun fall break, see you on Monday, October 17th!
Principal Engdall

Garden Update
Greetings!
Parent workday was a huge success! We had about 60 parents show up on Saturday. They pulled all the Bermuda grass and excavated the west perimeter AND Torty’s habitat. They amended the soil with compost and fertilizer and planted some flowers. It looks fantastic! Thank you to all the parents who came. There were a lot of primary parents which I really appreciate. One day your children can enjoy the fruits of your labor!
The chickens have also returned to campus! They look a little bedraggled but don’t worry! They’re only molting. This is a common occurrence for chickens and other bird species. I will get a few more egg-laying hens over the break and a visiting rooster to keep all the ladies in line. We’ll have quite the family. Stay tuned for news on the goats.
I created a survey about our garden program! Please share your feedback with me by completing the Google survey below. Just click the link: https://forms.gle/c7wrfvXK2jZik5meA
I am asking for a classroom volunteer to purchase vermicomposting bins for their child’s classroom. Each class needs two totes. They both need to be the same size and can be anywhere from a 12 Gallon to a 27 Gallon. Here’s a link to the Home Depot totes:
Here’s my email in case you need to reach me: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Home Depot gift cards are always appreciated. Continue bringing your aluminum cans, coffee grounds, eggshells and bottle caps. You can leave them on the table outside the front office except for the bottle caps. Have your child drop them in their classroom bin.
If you have any flagstone cuts or wood cuts we will also take them. We will also accept any tool donations for the field garden and/or ODE.
Enjoy your fall break!
Mr. Moench
Thank you, Mario, for your donation of wheelbarrows!
