The Leaf Project With Winters' Librarian, Mrs. G.!
First grade students listened to Mrs. G. read, “The Leaf Project” by Margaret McNamara. It explains that not all parts of the country experience Fall. They decided that since Florida does not have fall we would send them beautiful leaves from Pawtucket to decorate their classrooms. Mrs. G. reached out and found teachers at Cranberry Elementary in Northport, Florida, and they were thrilled at the prospect of showing their students the leaves. One teacher said seeing leaves change colors is an experience that her students do not have, so they will have a lesson on Autumn and all its glory.
Students have been bringing in leaves in leaf baggies. Students also wrote a class letter, as well as completed an individual writing piece to go with the leaves. In addition, Mrs. G. sent pictures of trees changing color all over RI, a copy of the book, "The Leaf Project," the book that started all this, and other books about Fall to the students in Florida to enjoy.

An Exciting Program Change! Best Buddies Becomes Best Art Buddies With the Help of Mrs. Vargas!
Henry J. Winters is entering its second year as an elementary school chapter of the worldwide nonprofit organization known as Best Buddies. Best Buddies is dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-on-one friendships. By offering to participate in the mission of inclusion at a young age, Best Buddies works to share inclusion and acceptance and nurture young hearts and minds to play, work, and learn together without prejudice. The goal at the elementary school level is to teach acceptance, value, and inclusion at an age before ingrained stereotypes and prejudices form.
Select fourth and fifth graders will be buddying with kindergarten and first grade students during art classes with Mrs. Vargas. Mrs. Vargas has stepped up to lead our Best Buddies program this year, using fourth and fifth graders in a leadership role as role models and helpers for our youngest students.
