CMS Media Center News
Carmel Middle School
Welcome to the 2016-17 school year!
When Can Students Visit The Media Center?
The CMS Media Center is open daily from 7:30 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. Students may visit during the following times:
- Before school
- After school
- During a passing period (the student is responsible for still getting to class on time!)
- During class (either with the teacher or by using a pass)
- During Core Plus time (with a pass)
Circulation Policies
Students may check out up to 8 books, magazines, and audiobooks (1 audiobook at a time, please) from the CMS Media Center.
- Books may be checked out for up to three weeks
- Magazines may be checked out for up to one week
- Audiobooks may be checked out for up to three weeks
Library materials may be renewed one time.
It is the student's responsibility to ensure that his/her materials are returned on time. Students with overdue items may not check out until the overdue item is returned. Classes do not visit every week like in elementary school, so students should keep up on materials' due dates. Click here for information on how your child can access his/her library record on a computer at home to see which materials he/she has checked out and when they are due. Or, click here for instructions on downloading the Destiny Quest app to get this information on any app-based device.

Computer Lab
When students visit the Media Center and wish to use a computer, they must sign up for a computer at the circulation desk.
Lost Your ID Card?
Each student receives a complimentary ID card at the beginning of the year. New students may visit the Media Center to obtain their first ID card.
Replacement ID cards cost $5 and can be requested at the circulation desk in the Media Center. ID cards are printed once per day and are delivered to students when they are ready.
Young Hoosier Book Award
Each year, CMS participates in the Young Hoosier Book Award (YHBA) program. This Indiana reading program offers 20 nominees, all decided on by a panel of librarians. The nominees vary in genre, length, and complexity, so there truly is something for every reader on the list. The program culminates each May when students vote for the winner. All of the YHBA nominees have a neon yellow sticker with an Indiana background that says "16-17" on the top of the spine. The Carmel Clay Public Library also has a section for the YHBA nominees, including eBooks and downloadable audiobooks.
For each YHBA book read (or listened to - audiobooks count!), students should fill out an "I Read It!" form, available in the Media Center or in Language Arts classrooms. Once a parent or guardian has signed the form, students turn it in to Mrs. Sauer. Students who read 5 or more of the nominees may cast a vote for the winner in May. At CMS, students who qualify to vote will also receive a prize and the TEAM with the highest average number of books read will get to have a party in the Media Center in May!

Scholastic Book Fair
Need a Book Suggestion?
Book suggestions are my specialty, so please ASK for a recommendation!
There is also a variety of resources in the Media Center to help with student book selections. Monthly displays will promote different themes and genres, the Author of the Month display gives students exposure to different authors, the YHBA program helps promote fantastic choices, and new books are added to the collection on an ongoing basis.
Students and parents may also follow me on Instagram (@the_loudlibrarian), where I post every book that I read, with hashtags to help readers categorize each book:
- #mglit = middle grades lit (interest level = grades 5-8)
- #yalit = young adult lit (interest level = grades 7+)
- #highschoolreads = young adult lit that is more appropriate for high school readers (interest level = grades 9+)
- #grownupreads = adult books (even I need a break from teen and tween books sometimes!)
I also post on Twitter (@CAMMediaCenter), and I will be using Snapchat to promote books this year! Users can add me (loud_librarian) to see new arrivals, quick book talks, etc.
