It's Not Just About SPED
PINNING DOWN ALL THINGS SENSORY
Proprioception - lets us know our body’s position in space
This newsletter was designed to give our readers a glimpse into the brain functions that cause a variety of behaviors in children. Occupational Therapist support children and adults in all things sensory. OT's provide therapy to children with proprioceptive malfunctions. These students have a hard time understanding their own body boundaries they also have problems understanding personal spacing. The following are items to be aware of for this disorder:
- Bumping or crashing into things or other people
- Kicking while sitting or foot stomping when walking
- Desiring to be wrapped or hugged very tightly, or to be dressed in tight clothing
- Using too much force to write or erase
- Playing too roughly with other children or pets
- Using too much force in carrying or opening, resulting in dropping, spillage or breakage
- Having difficulty locating body parts, especially with closed eyes
- Needing to bite or chew very frequently
- Difficulty climbing stairs, riding a bicycle, standing on one foot
SENSORY PROCESS OVERLOAD SIGNS IN THE CLASSROOM
Bight Lights +Photophobia (Light Sensitivity) and photosensitivity one's sensitivity to both natural and artificial light. In the classroom teachers might notice that some students. Students that are hypersentivie to lights also have difficulty when on the computer or smartphone. | Sounds Loud, high frequency, high pitch noise over a duration of time is actually painful to people with a sensitivity to noise. You may noice when this occurs, they tightly close their eyes almost simultaneously. The quickest solution is to over ones ears in an effort to thwart the noise. Other temporary strategies for noise cancelling are ear plugs, ear buds, and in extreme cases headphones. Some students are unable to tolerate the restrictiveness of the headphones; therefore, this isn't always a viable solution. | = Sensory Overload This happens when you're getting more input from your five senses than your brain can sort through and process. Multiple conversations going on in one room, flashing overhead lights, or a loud party can all produce the symptoms. Teachers reported providing too much information for some students, causes stress, anxiety and even pain. |
