What's Happening in the Library?
Chancellor Middle School
September: Welcome Back!
The mission of the library connects with the school’s mission of helping to prepare students for the future. The library program will prepare students for the future by teaching the essential information skills for the 21st century. The library will use the AASL Standards to support and enrich classroom instruction through collaboration and cooperation with teachers. The library will help prepare students for the future workforce by focusing on information literacy. Additionally, the library will help to promote and foster the love of reading through a diverse and current collection.
The Librarian
Hi, my name is Mrs. Binns! I am a native to the Fredericksburg area. I am extremely excited to be working in the same place where I went to school. This is my first year as a librarian. However, I was an English teacher for 8 years. I received my B.A. in English and M.Ed in Education at the University of Mary Washington. I have recently completed Longwood University's School Librarianship program. In my spare time, I love to travel and of course read! I am looking forward to working with all of the students, parents and staff who are part of the CMS Mustang family!
What Do We Do?
As mentioned in the mission statement, the library's purpose is to help prepare students for the 21st century work place. The librarian collaborates closely with classroom teachers to ensure students are practicing higher order critical thinking skills in lessons. Additionally, we promote and foster a love of reading. The library develops multiple programs to help encourage student reading. The library's goal is to provide a diverse and current collection to best support student learning and engagement.
What's New?
This year in the library, we are all about trying new things! The library is excited to announce three new additions to our program: Mustang Makers, Cafe Books, and Virginia Reader's Choice.
Mustang Makers
The library will be starting a program called Mustang Makers. The maker space will include hands on opportunities for students to practice their creative skills through games, crafts, computer programs, and more!
Cafe Books
In partnership with the local public library, Salem Church Library, CMS, will be participating in Cafe Book. Cafe Book begins with a selection of 16 recently published Young Adult Books. Students read the books and come during the library to discuss their books. Eventually, the list of 16 is narrowed down to represent the top favorites for the school.
Virginia Reader's Choice
Virginia Reader's Choice or VRC is a new book club offered in the CMS library. Students must read at least four nominated books on the VRC list. They are invited to come to talk about the books during lunch. Then they will vote for their favorite book.
Scholastic Book Fair
Coming in October!
The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to CMS! The book fair will be in the library from October 19-27. Students may come to the library during homeroom, during classes with a pass, or after school. The book fair will be open from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Our open house will be October 23rd from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM.
