Socktober at Lockhart Junior High
Every night in the United States an estimated 600,000 people live on the streets. Lockhart Junior High students and staff can make a difference in their lives. From October 3rd to October 19th we will be collecting socks that will be donated to local shelters. Bring a pair or two of new white socks that a man, woman, or child can wear…any size is great!
School Goal is 1200 Socks!

Lockhart Independent School District is partnering with Texas State University’s LBJ Institute for STEM Education and Research to provide science, technology, engineering, and mathematics learning experiences for LISD students. The partnership is part of a $324,000 grant the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded Texas State University to build the interest of students to pursue STEM careers.
The NASA Future Aerospace Engineers and Mathematicians Academy (FAMA) Central Texas Minority Youth is a two-year project lead by Texas State College of Education Associate Research Professor Araceli Ortiz. It is funded through NASA’s Minority University Research and Education Program Aerospace Academy (MAA).
In collaboration with LISD, the LBJ Institute will promote STEM Saturdays, hands-on, NASA-focused STEM activities for students in fourth through eighth grades, and their families, beginning next month. Programming will be provided in both English and Spanish.
The program kicks off Saturday, October 6, at Lockhart Junior High School from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. The program will continue every Saturday through November 10. Families can come to one or all of the Saturday events and can stay for any portion of time during those events. LBJ Institute staff can help parents register online on iPads in both English and Spanish at the event. Parents will also see sign up sheets coming home in student backpacks.
“This partnership provides our students with leading edge STEM experiences that may propel them into STEM careers,” said LISD Superintendent Mark Estrada. “We are grateful to Texas State University and the LBJ Institute for STEM Education and Research for providing this incredible opportunity to our students.”
In the spring, the program will expand to include take-home backpack projects which will promote family engagement and additional STEM experiences for students to complement current LISD curriculum.
To learn more about the grant program, please visit the LBJ Institute for STEM Education and Research website at http://www.txstate.edu/FAMA/.
