LCE News From Mrs. Blaney

February, 2022

Dear Parents,

This was a short month, but it was full of learning. I observed students dividing whole numbers and fractions, researching animals and famous Americans, analyzing poetry, learning about George Washinton, and making predictions before reading to support their comprehension.

Students also had the chance to purchase Candy Grams, pass out Valentines, play with new friends, and meet some members of the La Cañada community. It certainly is feeling more like a regular school year!

This newsletter summarizes some of the events of February and previews events of March.

February Is Black History Month

La Cañada Elementary has made a concentrated effort in the last few years to provide different experiences for students based on their grade level so that students have a rich perspective of the wide range of accomplishments of Black Americans in both the past and in the present by the time they leave elementary school. Lessons connected to the California Social Studies standards and the California Common Core ELA standards.

Some of the people the students learned about this month included:

Ruby Bridges

George Washington Carver

Ella Fitzgerald

Langston Hughes

Mae Jamison

Jacob Lawrence

Do you know about Paul Revere Williams (1894 - 1980)? He was a noted architect who was known as "Architect to the Stars". He designed many amazing estates right here in La Cañada. There is a self-guided driving tour attached at the end of this newsletter in case you are interested in seeing some of these homes.

Updated COVID Protocols

Students have the option again to take their masks off when they are outdoors. February also gave the students the opportunity to mix with other kids in their grade level! This will open up more chances for buddy classes, field trips, and spirit rallies!
