Coaching Remotely
Coaching in Crisis Volume 3
Student Support
- Establish required office hours by phone or computer: Teacher availability/ documented check-ins on students
- Use common platforms that students are familiar with to alleviate any confusion for parents and students.
- Given the reality of the digital divide, determine whether students are completing work online or traditionally.
- Keep variables in mind when you plan your lessons considering what students may have:
- Multiple classes
- Other responsibilities
- Personal or family illness
- Limited access to devices and internet
5. Continue to support the whole child- their mental health, nutritional needs and safety needs.
Remember, please establish office hours for your students.
Students should be actively involved in daily fun-filled assignments and projects improving analytical and critical thinking skills.
Consider:
- Family make-up may impact a student's engagement with the continuous learning cycle.
- Providing culturally relevant resources for students and family.
- Viewing family and student's learning through a trauma-informed lens.
As a friendly reminder, please visit your school's Remote Media Center's webpage for an abundance of resources.
Establish a System for Continuous Learning
1. Consider cross-curricular planning to assist in the students’ ability to manage work and new responsibilities at home.
2. Create projects/choice boards that give students and families flexibility to complete the work and tap interest/motivation.
3. Utilize common platforms to alleviate any confusion for parents/ students whether students are completing work online or traditionally.
4. Include non-technology based options for students.
5. Set realistic expectations. Utilize a delivery method consistent in expectations, timelines, and communication from the teachers to parents and students.
6. Focus on building relationships and connections, not just content. Short daily or weekly videos or phone calls can help the teacher connect with, reassure and provide students with encouragement.
Secondary Sample Schedule
Daily Learning Time: 3 total hours a day for all classes
• Recommend time:
- 30 minutes for each class - middle school
- 30 minutes for each class - high school
- After 15 minutes, strongly recommend students get up to move.
Daily learning time can include:
- Reading and reflection
- Writing
- Recorded lectures
- Handouts or packet work
- Choice board activities
- Discussion boards
- Online resources
- Content-based activities
It is of the upmost importance to note that remote learning does not require technology or digital connectivity.
