GET INVOLVED IN THE PTO!
PTO meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of every month, in the West Shore Library at 7 PM. The dates are as follows: September 14th, October 12th, November 9th, February 8th, March 8th, and April 12th. We welcome everyone, new and old, to attend and hope you will join us in helping make our schools the very best.
What We've Been Working On...
Reading:I have been DRA testing the students; they are doing great! Please read with them daily and record it on the home log. They are learning how to use their reading notebooks. We have started taking AR quizzes! If your child is allowed to bring in a tablet they have permission to take quizzes on it at school. Every student has their own AR goal. They can check the link for their goals and progress. https://hosted102.renlearn.com/738989/HomeConnect/Login.aspx
Writing: We are writing a fun piece entitled: "All About Me."
Math: We are practicing writing, showing and comparing numbers to 10,000 in standard form (4,085), word form (four thousand, eighty-five) and expanded form (4,000 + 80 + 5). The test will be on Monday. If you see “Put on your Thinking Cap” papers they are EXTRA CREDIT and optional.
Science: We are starting the unit called “Organisms have Character”. We are learning about plant parts and their function. Our first experiment involves watering the leaves only of a plant and watering the roots of another plant and making observations over the course of two weeks.
Social Studies: Our current unit is called “The Geography of Michigan”. This week we will be learning about the natural characteristics of Michigan and looking at all the different landforms and bodies of water we have.
Spelling: Look for what Spelling Stage/Group your child is in on Monday!

Third Grade Zoo Trip
On Friday, October 21st, the third grade classes will be going on an all day field trip to the Detroit Zoo. This is a follow up activity to our current science unit, “Organisms Have Character.” We will be leaving Torrey Hill at 8:45 a.m. and returning at 3:00 p.m. Parents who are driving their children home are welcome to stay longer. All parents are invited to attend as long as they have a current Volunteer Background Check on file. The cost of the trip is $7.25 for students and adults. This will cover your entrance fee and the cost of bus parking. Unfortunately, parents will NOT be allowed to ride the bus, and should plan to drive separately or perhaps carpool. Please let us know in advance if you will be transporting your child HOME. We are required to enter the zoo as a group. If a parent is not at the zoo when we arrive, they will have to pay $14.00 at the gate.
