WHAT IS THE NEW FINANCIAL AID GRADUATION REQUIREMENT?
In 2019, the 86th Texas Legislature established a requirement for all Texas students enrolled in 12th grade during the 2023-2024 school year, must do one of the following in order to graduate:
- Complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA);
- Complete and submit a Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA);

Steps
Step 1: Gather Required Information
Collect social security numbers, federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of
money earned. Have asset information, including bank statements and records of
investments.
Step 2: Create an FSA ID
Visit fsaid.ed.gov to create your Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID. Use the FSA ID to sign
the FAFSA electronically.
Step 3: Access the FAFSA Website
Go to fafsa.gov to start the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).Choose
the correct academic year and create an account.
Step 4: Fill Out the FAFSA
Follow the prompts, providing accurate information about student and parent
demographics, financials, and school choices. Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to import
tax information easily.
Step 5: Review and Submit
Carefully review all information for accuracy. Sign the FAFSA using your FSA ID. Submit
the application.
Step 6: Follow Up
Check your email for the Student Aid Report (SAR) for any corrections. Respond
promptly to any requests for additional information.
