dunning dash & multicultural fair

The Dunning Dash and Multicultural Fair are tomorrow!!!

THE DASH starts at EXACTLY 9am so please be on time. If you come late, we will not have volunteers on the course to guide your run/ walk. Bib pickup will be before the start time - 8:15-8:50am. If you are doing same day registration you MUST arrive by 8:30 to ensure being in the timing system. Parking: you can park in the lot if you are staying for the multicultural fair or on Frost street if you need to make an exit early. Cars cannot exit the horseshoe while the runners and timer are here.

THE MULTICULTURAL FAIR starts just after the Dash. Whether or not you run, you will enjoy a variety of food and drink from around the globe while supporting the school community.

We are lucky to have both vice principals from Walsh Middle School coming to our next PTO meeting, which will be held Wednesday, June 5th @ 6:30pm. Mr. Bergeron & Ms. Herrmann would love to answer any questions parents have regarding Walsh. As a 4th grade mom I'm excited to meet them before 5th grade starts and get a chance to ask questions in an intimate setting that we may not have the opportunity to do otherwise.

Hope to see parents from all grade levels asking questions & coming to this final PTO meeting of the year. Food will also be served so if you could let us know if you'll be attending that would be great!

If you have questions you would like answered please email them to the PTO at and they will forward them along to Mr. Bergeron & Ms. Herrmann prior to the meeting.

Graphic Novels

Brett Berkman, Literacy Coach

Do your children love to read graphic novels like Smile, Baby Mouse, and Bone? Do you worry if they are “real books?” They are!! Here are some reasons to encourage your children to keep reading graphic novels!

  1. ENGAGEMENT: Children LOVE them! And since they love them, they want to read them, talk about them, reread them, trade them, reread them, and reread them. In short, graphic novels get our children reading which is great!

  1. STRONG CHARACTERS AND STORYLINES: Many graphic novels are quality literature with strong characters and clear storylines. Students get to know characters who are going through troubles just like them. They also learn about people who are different from them. Both kinds of characters can help your child be a more empathetic and understanding person. And hopefully our children will learn to stay away from some of the mishaps Greg encounters in The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series!

  1. VOCABULARY: Graphic novels can be a great way to learn new words. The visual pictures next unknown words give students a clear picture of what these words might mean.

Do you have a favorite graphic novel? Please email me the title at

The Jane Shapiro Care and Share began in 1995 as a Dunning School community service project. Each month a specific food item is collected at the school to help keep A Place to Turn's shelves stocked. What a great sharing and learning project! Donations are gathered up by the students and then with help from staff, they are delivered to A Place to Turn. Learn more about A Place to Turn here.

Thank you for your contributions to A Place to Turn during the year. Our monthly food collection makes a huge difference in our community, while teaching our students the importance of giving.
