St. Paul Pennies for Patients Program Kickoff!
- On February 1st, St. Paul kicked off our Pennies for Patients Program! Pennies for Patients is a fundraising program that helps fund the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). During our assembly, we met a survivor named Margo who stole our hearts. She was two years old when she got sick with Leukemia. She is now four and is a survivor! Margo is a survivor of this terrible disease because of people like us who raise money to help research and find the cure for childhood blood cancers.
- Throughout the month of February, students will be collecting money to help support research and treatments to help save the lives of those affected with blood cancers. Students were given a small box on Monday to help them collect coins and bills. Students may also ask for donations from family and friends. Any amount will help out!
- This year we are able to ask for donations online! Our link to the school fundraising page is http://events.lls.org/pages/ky/StPaulSchoolLouisville. Students and parents can set up their own personalized page to fundraise for Pennies for Patients. Students who raise $50 or more on the website will receive a free t-shirt!
- This year our goal is to collect $2500 so that we, St. Paul School, can help to make a difference in the lives of those that are suffering with blood-borne cancers like Margo. Help support St. Paul Pennies for Patients Program by helping your child raise money and save lives!
Dear Families,
I wanted to share with you the reason that I feel so strongly about the Pennies for Patients program. I watched one of my very best friends fight a long, hard two-year battle against leukemia with her daughter, Addison (pictured below).
- Here is Rachel’s story.
Rachel's Story
"When Addison was diagnosed with infantile leukemia at 4 months old, I didn’t know much about childhood cancer. When I found out how many children were seen at Kosair Children’s Hospital for cancer on a yearly basis, my mind was just blown away. Since I didn’t know much about childhood cancer I expected that number to be pretty low. Do you know that over 600 different cancer kids are seen each year at Kosair Children’s Hospital alone?
I also didn’t know much about leukemia. We were fortunate to have the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to send us educational materials and their support along the way. However, one of the most important things the L&LS does is support cancer research. Did you know that only 4% of the National Cancer Institute’s (your federal tax dollars at work) total budget goes to childhood cancer? That’s ridiculous. Thank goodness for fundraisers like Pennies for Patients to help raise money for cancer research. Addison fought a long hard two-year battle; however, without the advances of science, she would not have made it out of ICU that first week she was diagnosed. Treatment for leukemia has come a long way and that’s not possible without donations from people like us.
What would you do if tomorrow you were told your brother, sister, son or daughter had cancer? Want to find a cure? Donate!"
~Rachel Miles
I want to thank Rachel for allowing me to share her story with all of you. Please help St. Paul support this very special organization. With our fundraising efforts, we can help children win the fight against blood cancers. This year’s goal is $2,500. Let’s surpass this goal and give more to help save lives!
Give more, get more!

CEF Application for 2016-17 NOW thru MARCH 15th
- The 2016-17 Private School Aid Service (PSAS) tuition assistance application is available online at www.ceflou.org. We also have applications available in the office for those families who prefer to mail their information. Families only need to complete one PSAS application to be eligible for tuition assistance for all their children. The completed application, along with the $25 fee, should be submitted to PSAS on or before March 15, 2016.
- We sent an instructional flyer and application to every St. Paul family recently. Asking for tuition assistance is a very private family decision. Often families who are experiencing difficulty are reluctant to take the steps needed to request assistance but let me assure you, if this is the case the answer will be “Yes” to assistance. Last year with the help of the CEF, needs-based to tuition discounts, archdiocese voucher fund and school choice St. Paul families were awarded $151,960 in assistance.
- NOW IS THE TIME for more families to join our storied Catholic school community with 105 years of tradition.

“Education is the greatest gift that a parent can give to their children- and it is also one of the most personal decisions that a parent can make. That’s why we need to support parental choice in education.”
– Governor Andrew Cuomo
Parents and families,
The 2016 Kentucky General Assembly has begun and there is an important issue you need to pay attention to: Senate Bill 44 and House Bill 336 would create a Scholarship Tax Credit Program in Kentucky. Parental choice is essential for quality education and scholarship tax credits will enable more parents to make that choice, no matter their economic standing.
Over the next few months, the issue will be heard in committees and EdChoice KY, a coalition of educators, business owners and citizens who want more choices for Kentucky students, will be educating citizens on the legislation. Senate Bill 44 and House Bill 336, also known as the “Opportunities in Education” act, create a nonrefundable tax credit which may be applied against the individual income tax, corporate income tax, the limited liability entity tax, or the bank franchise tax, for donations to scholarship granting organizations. Specifically, this legislation would allow donors to give more to groups like the Catholic Education Foundation, thereby producing more tuition assistance funds for families seeking a Catholic school education for their children.
Senate Bill 44 and House Bill 336 ensure that all students have the opportunity to obtain the education they deserve at a school that best suits their educational needs.

St. Valentine's Day Activities - 2/12
The teachers will conduct Valentine’s Day activities, including the traditional exchanging of valentine cards. Parents should not plan activities or plan to attend. Since we have stations of the cross at 1:30 PM and we need to begin setting up for our first fish fry around 2:15 PM, we could not establish a specific time for all classes to have parties with parents, without disrupting classes for extended periods of time.
I assure you that the children will have a rich and fun experience in learning the meaning of Valentine’s Day and more about St. Valentine of Rome.
I apologize for the late notification but because it was never published on the school calendar, so it escaped my attention. If you have already purchased any item(s), please forward to the teacher. I am sure they would appreciate.

Dear Parents and Families:
Reading for pleasure inside and outside of school has real and long-lasting benefits. It unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:
- Set the example. Let children see you read.
- Have a collection of books in the home. Update this collection routinely to keep pace with changing tastes and reading skills.
- Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.
Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings to school the books kids want to read. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.
Book Fair dates: Friday, February 12th - Thursday, February 18th
Shopping hours:
During school hours
Feb.12th from 4-8
