Dear Fort Parents,
I hope this message finds you well and filled with the joy of the holiday season! November has been an eventful month at Fort Smallwood, filled with exciting opportunities for our students and meaningful connections with our parents. Here are some noteworthy updates:
CBMS Visit for 5th Graders - AVID Program:
Our 5th graders had a special visit from CBMS to learn about the AVID program. Please be on the lookout for more detailed information from your child's teacher regarding program specifics. AVID is a fantastic opportunity for our students, and we encourage you to explore this enriching program further.
A heartfelt thank you to all the families who joined us for parent-teacher conferences. It's always a pleasure to connect with parents and share the remarkable achievements and progress of our students. Your partnership in your child's education is truly valued.
Scholastic Book Fair Success:
Our recent Scholastic book fair was a resounding success! It was wonderful to see so many eager students purchasing books and fostering a love for reading. A big thank you to Ms. Phillips and the dedicated volunteers who made this event possible.
Yearbook Ordering and Sentiments:
As we approach the end of the calendar year, it's time to start thinking about preserving the memories of this school year. Details about ordering a yearbook and purchasing a sentiment are provided below. Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to Ms. Phillips.
❄️As we dive into December, we have a plethora of exciting events and activities planned for our students. Here's a quick overview of some of what's in store:
🟠AACPS Unity Day - December 5th🟠
On December 5th, we will come together for our 2nd AACPS Unity Day of the year. It's a day to reaffirm our commitment to anti-bullying. Students are encouraged to wear orange or anti-bullying gear to show their support. Please note that this will be a half-day for students to allow staff to engage in Professional Development.
December Spirit Days:
Let's get into the festive spirit! We have planned some exciting spirit days throughout December to add a touch of holiday cheer. See below for detailing each day's theme. It's a great opportunity for our students and staff to showcase their creativity and enthusiasm.
Kindergarten Trip to Downs Park:
On December 7th, our kindergarteners will embark on a memorable trip to Downs Park to participate in the Environmental Literacy Program. It promises to be an educational and enjoyable experience for our youngest learners.
Coffee with Courtien:
Join me on December 15 from 9:00-10:00 to learn more about instruction at Fort Smallwood. We will chat over coffee & visit classrooms.
4th Grade Field Trip to Arlington Echo:
The 4th-grade class is set to explore and learn at Arlington Echo on December 19th. We anticipate a day filled with discovery and hands-on experiences that will enhance their curriculum.
Winter Chorus Concert:
Mark your calendars for December 21st at 6 pm! Join us for our Winter Chorus Concert and witness the incredible talent of our students. More information on how to attend this musical celebration will be shared soon.
PBIS Movie Celebration:
On December 22nd, we will wrap up the year with a Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) movie celebration. It's a time to recognize and reward our students for their positive behavior throughout the semester.
Winter Craft Celebration by PTA:
Our dedicated PTA will be spreading winter joy by organizing winter craft activities in classrooms to kick off the winter break. It's a wonderful way for our students to express their creativity and celebrate the season together. More information to come on how to get involved!
Race for Education Goal Celebration:
We're thrilled to announce that we've reached our Race for Education goal! To celebrate this achievement, on the 22nd, our PTA is sponsoring a laser light show. It promises to be a dazzling and unforgettable experience for our students.

Early Dismissal Requests
To help streamline our dismissal process and minimize disruptions to classroom instruction, we kindly request that all early dismissals be completed before 1:25 PM. This allows us to maintain a focused learning environment for our students and ensures their educational experience remains uninterrupted.
We understand that there may be exceptional circumstances that require an early dismissal, and we will always try to accommodate those situations. However, please communicate early dismissals to the front office before 1:25 PM.
