Snapchat safety
We know it is difficult to keep up with all that is happening in social media and games on mobile devices. Keep in mind that these activities could include the potential sharing of names, birthdays, age, geographic location, contact information and photos with identifiable information. Children of all ages must be taught that a level of anonymity will help to protect them from those who do not have their best intentions in mind. With that in mind, the Education Technology department will be sharing up-to-date research and guidance on Internet and social media basics. This week we are focusing our attention on an
Snapchat article published by Common Sense Media.
Join us for FAMILY LITERACY NIGHT!

Plymouth Early Childhood Center
We had a busy week at the preschool. Students were continuing to learn about fire safety and we had a special visit from the Plymouth firefighters. Students learned about pumpkins and had fun opening them up and exploring the insides. With the cold weather upon us the students bundled up and had fun on our playground with the play houses. Halloween is just around the corner and with that students played went “trick or treating” with their toys and doll houses, that were decorated as haunted houses. In Miss Gabby’s class the students enjoyed a number of fine motor activities., beading pipe cleaner pumpkins and ripping tape to make mummies.

Celebrating Writing and Reading
Today was a day of celebrating writing and reading. First we celebrated our kindergarten readers and writers with a parade of writing. Then we kicked off our Reading Incentive for the school year. Grade Five performed the book "The Giving Tree" Then we celebrated our readers from the summer. The three classes that had the highest number of readers had the opportunity to spray Mrs. Morgan with silly string. We encourage all students to read, read, read! You never know what Mrs. Morgan has up her sleeve for the next reading incentive....

A walking field trip to the Harlow House
This week, the 5th graders at NMES took a walking field trip to the Harlow House. Students were able to make candles in bee's wax and bayberry wax, weave yarn and spin wool into yarn. The tour of the Harlow House was a favorite of many 5th graders, and learning how to start a fire and grind corn were other highlights. We are so fortunate to live in an area with such rich history. And, at NMES, we feel especially lucky to be within walking distance to so many wonderful historical sites.

The band is back together!
The recently formed Allegro Band met for their first rehearsal this week. Students were accepted into the ensemble after completing a successful audition. These dedicated musicians will perform an advanced repertoire during before-school rehearsals at 7:15 AM every Thursday morning. These skilled musicians were able to sight-read their music and demonstrated that they are going to be an outstanding musical group!
Studying American Government with icivics
Grade 8 students have been working on Document Based Questions using the iCivics application. By reading excerpts and viewing videos about the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution, students are discovering the ways that the purpose of government changed in America from 1776-1789. The iCivics program breaks the text into manageable pieces for students and helps them complete the steps needed to evaluate these complex documents.

Biomedical Emergency Room Designs
Last Friday's interactive presentation with Dr. Jeff Cukor from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) and the fourth year Biomedical students from Plymouth North and Plymouth South High School was a great success. Dr. Cukor introduced challenges for the students to work through regarding Emergency Room design. Working groups of students created Emergency Room designs with a focus on a specific emergency group, for instance, pediatric emergency, trauma, adult emergency, etc. The group was able to also see and interact with three EMS EMTs from the MMA , Jeff Perez, Emma Sullivan, and Kyle Slydziewski. The EMTs showed the group how the design of the ambulance worked for optimal function. They also talked about the training involved in becoming an EMT and what the job was like. It was a very engaging field trip/workshop.
