Important Reminders!

  1. This Wednesday, September 30th is a LATE START!
  2. A new character education element is being added this year: Addams Family Circles! About once a month, students K-5 will come together in a group of about 25 and meet with their family circle teacher to talk about a character trait that we need to practice. In order for our first day (October 7th) to run smoothly, we need parent volunteers to help students find their way to the correct room on that day. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Shannon Bowman!

Upcoming Math Concepts!

This week in math, we will be covering the following topics:

-Adding/Subtracting mixed numbers with unlike denominators

-Quick Quiz #2

-More practice with adding/subtracting unlike mixed numbers

-Knowing if answers are reasonable using rounding and estimating

In order to be successful with these new concepts, your child should be comfortable with creating equivalent fractions, adding/subtracting fractions with like denominators, as well as converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers. If your child still needs practice with these skills, scroll down to the bottom of the newsletter for extra practice ideas!

**Homework Feedback Update**

Since homework and classwork is practice for your child and is not counted towards their marks on the report card, we will not be grading all the problems on the homework. However, I think it is very important that you and your child have feedback on how they are doing as they practice these concepts. In addition to collecting homework to check for completion and quality effort, I will also be selecting 3-5 focus questions to be corrected. These focus questions will be selected to reflect the crucial skills taught during our lessons and will give insight into how well your child is understanding the concept. If they are getting these wrong, please review with them at home where they made mistakes so that they can have a better understanding for the next time. Look for checked homework in your child's Friday Folder each week!

*Please also know that topics are subject to change, depending on how much time it takes us to master a new concept.

Reading Concepts This Week Include...

As we continue to read "Powerless" together as a class, your child will also have a book that they are reading and practicing strategies on from my classroom library. They may have homework that relates to their own book selection, or relating to our class book.

Reading strategies we will be practicing this week include:

-Reading between the lines to imagine what the text details imply

-Imagining scenes in the text

-Figuring out details from recalling what they read earlier in the text

**Please remember that your child should be reading for at least 30 minutes, 5 times per week. Their reading log should be filled out and signed by you frequently!

Words Their Way - Spelling

This past week, students received their spelling words as well as their homework packet. The group that they are in is based on where they placed on their diagnostic spelling test that they completed at the beginning of the year. If they are seeing words that they have seen before, it is because they have not yet mastered that spelling pattern, and they need to revisit it again.

Remember that these words will be studied for two weeks and on October 2nd, their homework packet is due and they will take their spelling test.

This week, there will not be challenge words to study. We will start challenge words on October 5th.

What's New in Writing?

This past week we have been busy drafting our personal narratives and enhancing them in many different ways!

Ask your child about what the heart of their story is! :)

This week we will be focusing on:

-Adding dialogue and using correct punctuation

-Paragraphing our narratives to show changes in time

-Finding places where we need more sensory detail

-Beginning the revising and editing process

-Special Happenings in Cafe 226-

Buzzing About Great Books!

This past week I introduced a new feature in our classroom library called Book Buzz! After reading a book that totally blew them away, students can take out a recommendation sheet from our Book Buzz binder. They can complete these recommendation sheets at home and turn them in for extra ticket potential!!

On the recommendation, they have to give a quick summary of the book (without giving away the ending of course!), write the title, author, genre, book location, and rate it with stars. They also will circle a few words that best describe the book and write about why they would recommend it to others.

As recommendations start coming in, students can look through the binder to find the most popular and interesting books available to them!

Ask your child what book their BUZZING about! :D

Flashlight Reading Fridays!

This year we will be having "Flashlight Fridays" during reading time! The concept is simple- once we are done with our reading lesson, we will turn off all the lights, close the curtains, choose special spots throughout the classroom, and read with flashlights! Please send your child in with a flashlight this coming Friday so that they can partake in the fun :)

I will have extra flashlights on hand if needed. We have already discussed that privileges will be taken away from individuals that cannot use their flashlight respectfully and responsibly. Please remind your child that they should be on their best behavior with their flashlight! Thank you :)
