Raba Rattler
February, 2019 Edition
Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
I would like to thank the many parents who attended our January special events: Mid-Year Awards Assemblies and Fun Glow Run. Our staff and students made it through the three weeks of CDB testing and look forward to celebrating and working on areas of weakness. We hope to see you in attendance at our February events: Specifically, our 4th grade STAAR writing for parents on Feb 6th, Student Council/PTA dance on Feb 8th and Family STREAM Night on Feb 12th.
It is hard to believe that we are on the third nine weeks of the school year. This will be a very busy time for our teachers and students as we continue to monitor our progress toward achieving our goals for the 2018-19 school year. This semester will go by quickly, and we need your help in making sure your child meets the state and district expectations in order to be promoted to the next grade level. Please help your child by reinforcing the skills taught at school. Reading should be a nightly activity, as well as practicing the appropriate basic facts.
There are a few new items that I want to address at this time.
1. Chronic Absenteeism: We can teach children only if they are at school. The State of Texas correlates post-secondary readiness to attendance. The state says that if a child misses 10% of the school year they are in danger of being ready for secondary schooling. This equates to 18 absences in one year. What constitutes an absence, you might ask….. It includes excused and unexcused absences. We ask you to communicate with us if there are any extenuating circumstances where the school can assist with attendance. We also ask for your support.
2. Traffic on Raba Drive or handicapped parking: If you have concerns regarding traffic on streets surrounding Raba or parking; please direct calls to 311; the city’s service requests line.
3. Attention— Safety Concerns
· Please do not drop students off in the parking lots or in the bus loop.
· Please do not drop students off until 7 a.m. when staff is on duty.
· Please have your ID ready and check into the office to receive a visitor’s badge whenever you are on campus during school hours.
Please, follow our safety procedures! We are thinking of the safety of your child.
Yours in education,
Mrs. Francesca L. Neal
Principal

100th Day of School!
Please help us celebrate Raba's 100th Day of school! The 100th day is Wednesday, February 6th so please encourage your child to help us celebrate. There are so many ways to show we are 100 days smarter - students can dress up as if they are 100 years old - collect and bring in 100 of an item to show your class - create a 100 day poster - create a 100 day t-shirt with 100 things on it - put 100 hair bows in your daughter's hair...so many ways to celebrate! I am so excited to see what my Raba students are going to do for their 100th day! Please join us in celebrating this awesome accomplishment!

A Word from the Nurse
- Please keep emergency phone numbers up to date.
- Please remember to keep a change of weather appropriate clothes in your child's backpack for PPCD, Pre-K, and Kinder.
- Please if your child is sick please keep them home till they are fever free for 24 hours with no fever-reducing medicine given.
**Weather Related**
This is the time of year when the weather changes several times within a week...and sometimes during the same day! NISD policy states that students will not have outside recess when the temperature, including wind chill, is 45 degrees or lower. Instead, student will engage in indoor activities such as Go Noodle or other games that promote movement.
Thank You,
Keri Heckman, RN

Counseling Corner
The counselors, Mrs. Solis and Ms. Wood, would like to thank all the students who showed #Kindnessinaction as part of No Name-Calling Week. Students at Raba, high fived friends, gave sincere compliments and helped friends in need. Keep it up kind rattlers! You rock!
In February, Schools across the nation will celebrate School Counseling Week! This year’s theme, “School Counselors: Providing Lessons for Life,” will be celebrated Feb. 4-8, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors. National School Counseling Week, highlights the impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. Raba counselors service all students through classroom lessons, and focus on college and career readiness!
Have you thanked your #schoolcounselor today?

PTA News
We’d also like to say goodbye to our PTA President, Polly McDonald. I will be taking over for the remainder of this school year. I would also like to thank Destiny Fuentes for agreeing to be the Parliamentarian. All positions will be up for election in April 2019. We will be holding elections for President, VP Membership, Treasurer, Volunteers, Secretary, and Fundraising. We will also be appointing a Parliamentarian. I hope that you would consider running for any of these positions. We have been building up our PTA and have done great things together. I have served on the board for 4 years and I think it is time for someone else to take this PTA to a higher level. If you are interested in any position, please let any PTA board member know, or any staff member. It has been so satisfying to be able to work with great people who just want to make Raba the best school in Northside.
Our next General PTA meeting will be Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at 5 pm. Hope to see you there.
