NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
April 19, 2019
From Principal Reckert
Dear Nederland Elementary Families,
I’m excited to share with you information about the continued literacy roll-out at NES. This past year we rolled out new materials in grades K-3 from the Fountas and Pinnell system. This research-based and highly acclaimed program has added new, engaging reading materials that are differentiated for students’ ability levels in these grades. Additionally, a targeted phonics program, Fundations, was rolled out in preschool and kindergarten.
For the 2019-2020 school year, our fourth and fifth-grade students will also be receiving Fountas and Pinnell materials which are currently being published. Additionally, first and second grade will be participating in the Fundations program. It’s wonderful to see this comprehensive approach to literacy being adopted in BVSD.
I’m also pleased to share with you that faculty adopted a five-year social-emotional learning plan that weaves together and strengthens the work we’re already doing in the building. We will be continuing our direct delivery of social and emotional skills and supporting our students and teachers with restorative practices, mindfulness, and self-regulation strategies. We appreciate our partnership with Teens Inc. which provides support for our staff and students. We are also very grateful to BVSD for staffing us with a full-time counselor beginning next year!
Did you know? “A recent meta-analysis of over 200 studies of school-based programs (Durlak, et al., 2011) revealed that classroom time spent on social, emotional, and behavioral learning and self-management helped to significantly increase students’ academic performance, interpersonal success, emotional self-control and well-being, and behavioral skills and development.” (http://www.nea.org/home/50899.htm)
Have a great weekend!

Attendance
Daily attendance at school is still important, even as we approach the last few weeks of the year. Active learning is still taking place each and every day, and oftentimes field trips and end-of-the-year projects are culminating learning activities that pull together skills and knowledge from the entire year. NMSHS Principal
The following letter was sent to NMSHS families about the principal position there:
Dear Nederland Families and Staff,
I am pleased to announce that Mr. Rick Elertson has been appointed as the permanent principal of Nederland Middle-Senior High School, pending approval from the Board of Education. As you know, he has been serving as interim principal since January.
Following an extensive search and interview procedure which included a national job posting and three-step selection process, Mr. Elertson was selected following input from parents, staff and the community, as well as pertinent reference checks. The needs of the community were gathered from the staff, students, and parents in person and online. We thank the four highly-qualified candidates who competed for this position.
We also would like to thank the fifteen people, including parents and staff, who served on the interview team and assisted in final interviews. I believe that Mr. Elertson's proven successes as an assistant principal and interim principal in the Boulder Valley School District, along with his history of a successful principalship on Western Slope are evidence of his skill and expertise as a leader.
In addition, Mr. Elertson has expressed a strong commitment to the Nederland community. He is NED Proud and understands the unique strengths and challenges of a mountain town.
Mr. Elertson will bring a rich background of skills, knowledge, and experience to this school. He exhibits a strong commitment to his own professional growth as a leader, to student-centered learning, differentiation of instruction, innovation, collaboration and to building strong relationships with students, staff and the families in the community.
Our goal in this search was to find an exceptional school leader for Nederland Middle Senior High School, and we believe Mr. Elertson will deliver the excellence in leadership that the Nederland community desires and deserves.
Join me in congratulating Mr. Elertson!
Sincerely,
Sam Messier
Assistant Superintendent

Parent Volunteers Needed to Welcome new families in August
The NES Parent Partners program is looking for volunteers for next year! This program links supportive, seasoned parents with new families as they learn about NES. Our intention is to reach out to new families, develop supportive relationships, and provide a welcoming face and easy access to answers as new parents become engaged in their child's life at school. The commitment includes a short training in July, a few social activities beginning in August, followed by phone calls inviting parents to join in school events designed just for them. Please contact ann@teensinc.org if interested in welcoming new families and ensuring a positive parenting community.

Social Emotional Learning at NES
Social Emotional Learning at NES (April 15 -19, 2019)
Students are applying their entire year's worth of SEL learning to work through problems and conflicts. The STEPS for collaborative Conflict Resolution include: ( 1) Using strategies to Cool Down first ( 2) Sharing your feelings, needs, and an objective description of the problem through I-messages (3) Listening to other's feelings, needs, and perspective by repeating, re-framing, and using clarifying questions (4) Taking responsibility for your part of the conflict by using genuine apologies (5) Brainstorming solutions together (6) Picking the best solution by considering the consequences for everybody (7) Ending on a positive note with an affirmation, thank you, or forgiveness.
