A Note from Shillingburg
This week, we had the opportunity to walk Mrs. Asif's English I class for our district CST walks, and I was blown away by her engagement with her students.
Mrs. Asif planned an intentional lesson, which required students to participate in groups and engage each other in discussion. She was teaching a difficult concept around iambic pentameter, so she had students work together as a team to stomp and clap the sounds before putting the words together. Her plan produced a choral response, which encouraged the entire class to participate.
These short, planned opportunities for engagement and collaboration are what our students need! Well done, Mrs. Asif.
At the Vision 2030 Summit last night, students from around the district shared what they envision for our schools and community. The quote above spoke to me. Our role as educators are QUICKLY changing as technology grows exponentially. We emphasize the importance of communication and collaboration often at Clements, and this quote is a direct example of why our students need these learning opportunities. I challenge you to plan weekly for your students to connect, problem-solve, collaborate and provide feedback. Please share these ideas with your admin so we can share out with our staff!
Shout Outs!
Congrats to the Clements Band who worked tirelessly through a heat wave and produce one of the best programs I have seen as a school leader. While we did not make it to state, our Rangers made gave their all. We are proud of you all and gratefulu for your leadership, Mr. Johnson!
- Congrats to Mr. Tielke, our WINNER for the Ranger cardigan! Thanks for dressing out and connecting to your students.
- Shannon Gray, thank you for organizing our Senior Trunk or Treat this week! Our students had a blast!
- Shout out to Ashli Taylor for organizing our district CST walks. Thank you, teachers, for giving us the chance to walk your rooms. We enjoyed every second!
- Shout out to Mr. Byrd, Mr. Warren, and Mr. Sweeney for handling a tough situation this week in the SPED Hallway.
Ranger of the Week
This week’s honoree are Bryan Waites, Leslie Flynn, Kyle Emiliani, and Preston Winton! Here are some of the comments from the nomination forms:
Often, the head director’s name is the only one on the program, but I could not do it without them. They have done so much to make our team successful. Bryan runs all of our electronics and sound effects, plus the percussion section. Leslie has taught 100% of the choreography and much of our fundamentals of marching. Kyle has handled props, marching fundamentals, and brass feature. Preston handles all things color guard. This is the best team I have worked on and giving them the recognition they deserve pales in comparison to what I wish I could do for them.

Attitude of Gratitude Month
“I am happy because I am grateful. I choose to be grateful. That gratitude allows me to be happy. – Will Arnett”
November is a time where I like to shift our focus and recognize all the blessings we have been given as a Clements family. Gratitude has a funny way of shifting our perspective, so over the month, I encourage you take a gratitude challenge for both you and your students. Find moments to show gratitude for your students and your colleagues. Make a gratitude list! Recognize your teacher leaders and thank them for stepping up. Thank a parent for a luncheon, a teammate for making copies, or one of our SRO’s for their support. Find gratitude in your world, and you cannot help by finding rich blessings around you.
Sponsors and Coaches, I am sending a separate email to challenge your student leaders to get involved with supporting another club/organization. We can show gratitude by showing up at a game or event, partnering up on the can food drive, or even participating! Shout out to NAHS for kicking off the week with a pumpkin carving competition and for the basketball team for cleaning the commons!

Positive Office Referrals
Do you have a student, or students who have gone above and beyond in your class or on campus? Take time to recognize them by filling out a Positive Office Referral.
Some referrals could include, but not limited to:
· Great attitude
· Helpful with technology, resources, collaboration
· Engagement
· Helping other students for various reasons
· Improvement in grades, attendance, engagement
This is the highlight of the our week as administrators and the outpouring of joy that the students feel is contagious. The list is endless of all the positive things students do on a daily basis and we need your help recognizing them!
Here is a unique perspective from a parent regarding one of the positive office referrals you wrote:
"This week one of your teachers created a positive office referral for a 9th grade student at CHS for their positive attitude and efforts in class. The student was called down to Ms. Taylor’s office with the assumption that they had done something wrong because this child doesn’t often get recognized doing things well at school. It was such a great and wonderful surprise to have this positive interaction with Ms. Taylor and be acknowledged by the teacher for a job well done. The mom, with whom I’m friends with, was in shock and so grateful to receive a positive call about her child from the school. Keep up the great work to build positive interactions with students and families! "
Action Items and Reminders
- Rangers, the legal department has told us we are no longer allowed to provide jeans passes or work from home days to encourage voter turnout. So far, we have 22% of our staff out to the polls. That's a great start, Rangers! Click the attachment above for a voting location close to you.
- District statement: FBISD adheres to the highest standards of integrity. It is not a violation of law to encourage voting, a cornerstone act of American civic participation that is embedded in our society. Nonetheless, as we reflect on our amazingly diverse community, we understand the complexity of different viewpoints and have pivoted away from encouraging the act of voting through non-monetary incentives.
