Curriculum Corner
Writing
Today, we began reading A Writer's Notebook by Ralph Fletcher. This week, we will focus on different techniques writers use to gather ideas, such as using unforgettable stories, things they wonder about, and focusing on small moments and details instead of large periods of time.
Reading
This week in reading, I will begin reading The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo to the class while discussing the characters and how to interact with them as a reader. Student will then have the opportunity to practice this in the fiction book that I've asked them to keep at their desk to read independently. I will be conferencing with students individually to help them apply these skills.
Also, please help your child remember to read at home for a minimum of 20 minutes per day for 3 days each week. Each student has a reading log to keep track of his/her reading.
Language Arts
We will be using the Wordly Wise curriculum to study vocabulary this year. I will be introducing students to the work and routines that we will do each week and we will take a unit assessment on Friday, August 26. These assessments are multiple choice and cover the meanings, synonyms, and antonyms of the words being studied.
Math
We will continue working on unit 1 this week and will focus on rounding and estimation strategies. If you have not made a Khan Academy account for your child yet, please try to do that this week and send me your child's username and password.
Indiana History
We will continue learning about map skills this week including: oceans, continents, lines of latitude and longitude, hemispheres, map key, and compass rose.
