HOOT NEWS
SPRING BREAK:
Teachers, thank you for your hard work and dedication to your students and to our campus. I am grateful to work with such a great group of professionals! I hope you were able to enjoy a much deserved break!
CLASSROOM WALK-THROUGHS:
Over the next month, we will continue our classroom walk-throughs. We hope to see evidence of daily usage of Kim Sutton math strategies, evidence of small group instruction for Reading (and use of interactive strategies for students during read to self time), and differentiation. We are wrapping up all of our PPfT evals for this year and will begin the next part of your evaluation. We will go over this on March 30th at our PD day.
REPORT CARDS:
Report cards will go home on Wednesday, March 21st.
CAT TEAM SCHOOL VISIT:
The Doss CAT team is invited to attend a school tour this Tuesday, March 20th. Please join me in checking out Lagos Elementary in Manor ISD. You will need to secure a half day sub (for the afternoon). I suspect we will leave around 12:00. Please let Adriana know if you plan to attend this tour.
The gates on each side of campus will be closed and locked during the school day. Volunteers and classroom visitors will have to check in and out at the front office. We will have student badges for them to borrow while on campus so they can get in and out of the building. We will exchange a badge for their car keys (similarly to what the Read Naturally volunteers do) in order to make sure badges are returned. If you are in a portable, please inform your classroom volunteers of this new system. Latrese has emailed you the lock combinations. Do not share these combos with parents, students, spouses, or children. Thank for your help with this!
CONFERENCE FORMS:
Please turn all conference forms in to Pat by March 21st. These need to be in alphabetical order.
AUSTIN LIFE CHIROPRACTIC CENTER:
Do you remember when we had Austin Life Chiropractic come to Doss to give our staff a free chair massage? Wasn't that great? Many of you signed up for a consultation with the Austin Life Chiropractic center, and the fees you paid for the consultation came to a total of $350. The Austin Life Chiropractic Center donated this money BACK to Doss!! What an act of kindness for our school!
COPIERS
We need everyone's help to REDUCE the number of copies we make at Doss. Did you know we pay for the number of copies we make? And we’ve been significantly over our budget! Therefore, after Spring Break you will once again be required to scan your badge when you need to use the copier. Don't have a badge? See Adriana.
Here are instructions for using your badge with the copiers. Important Note: You only need steps 2 & 3 the first time you use any one of the copiers. After that, all the copiers will remember your badge:
- Swipe your AISD badge on the card reader area of the copier (top left on Owlasis copier and front left on the others)
- Enter your AISD network username using the touch screen keyboard then select Done
- Enter your password using the touch screen keyboard then select Done
- Select Copy on the display panel, enter the number of copies you need, and press the big green Start button
- When you are done, press the Login/Out light/button on the control panel and follow the screen messages
Let's be mindful of the number of copies we make and do our best to minimize waste. Thanks!
STUDENT CLIMATE SURVEY
All Doss 3rd-5th grade students need to take the on-line Student Climate Survey before March 23 (the Friday after Spring Break). This survey data is required by the district to create the campus report, have data for the superintendent's scorecard, and have data for the Doss campus improvement plan (CIP).
A link to the Student Climate Survey has just been added to the AISD Student Cloud (my.austinisd.org). Now, when students log into the cloud, the page that opens will include a link to the survey. Please remember that the survey must be completed by students at school. The survey must not be taken while students are off campus or at home.
It only takes about 15 minutes for the whole class to complete the survey. Please coordinate with James if your class needs to come to the computer lab or if you need to check out the Chromebook cart to take the survey. Thank you!

COMPUTER LAB
Tech tip - Stephanie Hawkins saw Classkick at the TCEA conference and liked it. I like to think of it as worksheets on the computer that allows for the teacher to watch while the kids are working and can provide real time comments. You can use pictures or text from your web searches to quickly create and format pages. It will also grade the papers as you go. It works in a browser (windows laptops & Chromebooks) or there is an app for tablets (iPad or Android). I added a link for the student page on the Doss Owl Bookmarks page to help kids find it. Here is a quick overview video.

NURSE'S NOTES
ACTIVE SUPERVISION, BARRIERS, AND SIGHTLINES - Always actively supervise children when they're both in and around the water; ensure that pools are secured with appropriate barriers; and require children to swim within designated areas that are within sight of guardians and certified lifeguards.
TEACH THEM EARLY - Teach children to get comfortable in the water and swim at an early age and educate them early about water safety.
WEAR SUNSCREEN - Protect your skin from sun burn and sunstroke by wearing hats and sunglasses and applying sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher and limiting direct exposure to sunlight for prolonged periods of time.
DON'T BE PUSHY - Instruct children to never run, push or jump on others in and around the pool.
SUIT UP! - Make sure children always wear life jackets and use proper water safety and flotation devices.
WHO'S YOUR BUDDY? - Never let children swim alone; always designate swimming buddies before visiting the beach or pool.
I'M ON A BOAT! - Children should always wear a PFD (personal flotation device) while on a boat. If it doesn't fit, get one that does.
STAY HYDRATED - Ensure that kids drink plenty of fluids to stay properly hydrated, especially on hot days.

Below is a link to the various Features and Supports that are allowable for STAAR this year. Refer to the Student Form for clarification on what committees determine the eligibility and if it is allowed for certain students.
1. Accessibility Features: These are procedures and materials that are allowed for any student who needs them. You do not have to document these. The student should be comfortable using these features, but they cannot be “required” to use them during a test administration.
2. Designated Supports: These are locally-approved supports for students who meet eligibility criteria.
· Braille
· Content and Language Supports
· Content and Language Supports Guidelines
