Save the Dates: Our Spring Book Fair is coming soon!

Our Spring Book Fair is coming soon! The fun will begin on Friday, February 27th, and will last through Friday, March 6th. We'll also be open before and during All Arts Night on Monday, March 2nd, and following our Walk at School event on Wednesday, March 4th. Make plans to visit this exciting celebration of reading!

Greenville Drive Reading All-Stars

Forms have been sent home for the Greenville Drive Reading All-Stars Program. This can be done along with our school Quarterly Reading Challenge. Reading All-Stars forms will be due to Ms. Knight on or before March 6th.

All students who turn in the form will receive a voucher for the Greenville Drive celebration game on Monday, April 13th. Let's plan to have a huge turnout for Fork Shoals School by showing our love of reading!

3rd Quarter Reading Challenge

Our 3rd Quarter Reading Challenge has begun! Your goal is to read as much as possible between now and March 24th. Reading logs have been sent home, and extras will be available in the library or here.

All reading logs will be due no later than Friday, March 27th (our last day before Spring Break)! After Spring Break, prizes will be awarded to the top readers in each grade level, and every participant will receive recognition.

Remember to list books completed with page numbers. An adult must sign by each book completed, and all pages must be totaled at the end.

Book of the Week: Fifty Cents and a Dream

Fifty Cents and a Dream: Young Booker T. Washington, written by Jabari Asim and illustrated by Bryan Collier, is nominated for the 14-15 South Carolina Picture Book Award.

Fifty Cents and a Dream is an inspiring story about a young Booker T. Washington. It introduces young readers to this important figure, his early life as a slave, a worker in salt mines, his first days in school, and, eventually, a young man who journeys hundreds of miles just for the chance to go to college. He finally arrives--with only fifty cents in his pocket. Even then, he must work day and night to make his dream a reality.

This book shines a light on the power of words, dreams, and persistence. Booker T. Washington never gave up on his dreams of becoming an educated man, even when it would have been easier to quit. He persevered and became not only a college graduate but also a writer, professor, and leader. He founded the Tuskegee Institute and paved the way for many young men and women who would come after him.
