Superintendent's Update
Dear SLCS Families and Staff Members,
South Lyon East hosted our final Curriculum Night of the 2022-23 school year. Thank you to our staff and families for a great evening. The energy and enthusiasm running throughout each of our schools has been refreshing.
Speaking of great events, this weekend is South Lyon High School’s Homecoming and the South Lyon Area Pumpkinfest. Hopefully families get a chance to have fun and enjoy some of the great events happening in our community. Writing as a former high school principal that can’t take off that hat: SLHS students-Have a great time, but remember, safety first.
As previously shared we will be using this weekly communication to showcase the people that make SLCS such a great place. Here are the first two. Enjoy!

Special Education
Family Matters, created by the Michigan Department of Education, provides parents and families with information about special education and other resources. One of the types of resources that Family Matters has created are “fact sheets” The fact sheets explain special education laws and practices. The documents are easy to read and give links to more in-depth resources. Family Matters fact sheets are intended to enhance public understanding of Michigan's special education system and are not a substitute for official laws and regulations. Take a quick look at the Family Matters website: Family Matters Website
Stay Well Workshop
Four in 10 teenagers report they feel "persistently sad or hopeless," according to a recent CDC survey. Our new Saturday afternoon workshop series for teens can help young people struggling with these kinds of feelings. The online workshops are geared toward helping teens understand the causes and consequences of emotions. Participants will learn how to turn off self-judgment, manage relationships better, and regulate their ups and downs -- with the goal of finding more meaning and purpose in life. Mental health counselor Zeinab Moussa, M.A., LLPC, will lead the workshop. Zeinab specializes in facilitating dialogue about feelings and emotions. She has children of her own and understands the negative impact COVID-19 has had on the mental health of teens and young adults. To participate, all you need is an Internet connection to Zoom, paper and pencil, and an open mind. All sessions are free of charge. Click here to REGISTER and click here for more information.
Week 2 / Saturday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. - Emotional Intelligence vs. Emotional Judging
Week 3 / Saturday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m. - Practical Coping
Week 4 / Saturday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. - Moving Forward

School Nurse Update
We are currently seeing the number of positive COVID-19 cases increase in school age children in our area. Now that we are back in school this is an expected outcome, as we are also seeing an increase in many illnesses due to the close contact and multiple number of people students interact with on a day to day basis. Whether your student has COVID symptoms or symptoms of another illness, it’s important to keep your student home if they are not feeling well. Students who are not well do not learn effectively and if their bodies are unable to rest, it will take longer to recover. If your student does test positive for COVID-19, it is recommended that they stay home for 5 days, and then wear a mask around others for days 6-10. For additional information see MDHHS COVID-19.
Wellness
September - National Better Breakfast Month: Did you know that September is National Better Breakfast Month? Research shows that those individuals who eat breakfast have better overall health. Skipping out on breakfast can negatively impact a student’s academic success, as well as lead to weight gain and unhealthy food choices. The American Dietetic Association states that children who eat a healthy breakfast are more apt to have better concentration, alertness, creativity, be more active and miss fewer days of school. Here are some suggestions for back to school breakfasts; Berry Good Overnight Oatmeal, Strawberry Banana Smoothie, Banana in a Blanket, and Mini Quiche Cups.
