Reflections
A Categories of Interest form was sent home in the PTA Packets last week; please fill out this form and return it no later than Friday, September 16th in order to participate in the Reflections Contest. The official entry form will be distributed only to those who return the Categories of Interest form. We encourage all students to participate.
The theme for this year’s National Reflections Art Program is "Show Your Voice!" The Reflections Art Program has been bringing the arts to life for more than 10 million students since 1969. California State PTA and its members, families and kids are on the forefront of this amazing program, which increases community awareness of the importance of arts in education.
Reflections encourages students of all ages to:
- Unleash creative talents and be inspired
- Express themselves imaginatively in their artwork
- Experience the fun and joy of making art
- Tap into critical thinking skills to create art inspired by the annual theme
- Receive positive recognition for their original works of art.
All students attending PTA schools sponsoring the program are invited to participate and submit original artwork in one of six areas:
- Dance Choreography
- Literature
- Photography
- Film Production
- Music Composition
- Visual Arts
Artwork and Official Entry form will be due October 14th. The Showcase date is TBD at this time.
Picture Day - Tuesday, September 27th
Smile! Picture day is almost here. Please see the flyer below for more information.
LatinX Heritage Month Highlight
Ellen Ochoa
This month’s cultural recognition for “We care Wednesday” our attention is focused on Latin Heritage. Latin Heritage Month celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latin Americans past and present. For kids, learning about culture expands their perspective of the world and deepens their understanding and empathy for the experiences of others.
We would like to take this time to recognize our feature spotlight on Ellen Ochoa.
Ellen Ochoa is an American engineer, former astronaut and former director of the Johnson Space Center. In 1993, Ochoa became the first Hispanic woman to go to space when she served on a nine-day mission aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. The purpose of the Shuttle mission was to study the Earth's ozone layer. A veteran of four space flights, Ochoa has logged nearly 1000 hours in space. Ochoa became the first Hispanic director and the second female director of Johnson Space Center on December 31, 2012. Ellen Lauri Ochoa was born on May 10, 1958 in Los Angeles, California. Ochoa graduated from Grossmont High School in El Cajon in 1975. Ochoa received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from San Diego State University and graduated 1980, before earning a Master of Science degree, and a Doctorate from Stanford Department of Electrical Engineering in 1981 and 1985, respectively.
Let us Honor Ellen Ochoa today on We Care Wednesday for Latin Heritage Month.
“I hope to continue to inspire our nation’s youth to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math so they too may reach for the stars.”- Ellen Ochoa

MEALS ARE AT NO COST TO FAMILIES ALL YEAR!
Hello Parents/Guardians,
We are excited to announce that meals are FREE to ALL students for the 2022-2023 School Year.
- We encourage all families to submit a meal application, if you usually qualify, as it provides additional educational funding for your school and benefits for your household. It will also ensure your student is covered for free meals the first 30 days of school for the 2022/2023 school year to avoid meal charges.
- Eligibility guidelines can be found on www.yourchew.com, in the upper left corner, under meal applications.
- Note - You do not need to complete a meal application if you have already received a letter indicating that your student has been directly certified.
Please view our menus online at www.yourchew.com for nutritional information.
Important Menu Update:
Last minute menu changes may occur frequently and are out of our control due to the nationwide food supply chain issues and labor shortages.
Menus on our website may not reflect these changes.
We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.
