Early Athens
Like many other city states, Athens was ruled by landowning nobles during the 600 B.C. An assemble of al the citizens existed , but it had little power. The government in Athens was a oligarchy. An oligarchy is a few people holding power in a city state.

Around the 600s citizens began to rebel against the nobles.
- farmers owed money and land to the nobles
- many soled themselves into slavery to pay back the nobles.
- Farmers demanded no more debt, along with the poor peoples land.
Athen kings
The 1 king was king Solon.
- He canceled all the farmers debts.
- Freed those who have become slaves.
The 2 king was king Peisistratus.
- He divided large among the landless farmers.
- He loaned money to poor people and also gave them a job
- He made a council of 500 citizens to carry out the daily business.
- Council proposed laws, dealt with foreign countries, and over saw treasury.
