Principal's Message

Montebello Community,

As we return from our Spring Break, I hope everyone is recharged and ready to finish the 2022-2023 school year strong. We had a very eventful March with our budget approval process, the return of athletics, MISA testing for our 5th and 8th graders and finally our Mother/Son Dance.

Our budget is well on its way to final approval after our sessions with the staff, families and community. We have exciting news for our future academic programming that will set Montebello apart in the city. We will continue to invest in our students and their overall development both academically and socially.

We completed our MISA (Science) testing for all students in grades 5 and 8 and our completion/administration rate was 98.3%. This is an excellent percentage and I thank you for ensuring that students are coming to school everyday. As we move toward the MCAP administration for students in grades 3-8 in Mathematics and English Language Arts it is important that students attend each day during the the testing window.

In response to the highly successful Daddy/Daughter Dance in November, Montebello held its first annual Mother/Son Dance and by all accounts it was a success. The mothers really turned out for their sons and the sons showed their moms off on the dance floor. We want to continue to have events that highlight and promote relationships and a sense of community and connection within the school. We want to help create memories for our families and students.

Last month our Mighty Montebello Dolphin Basketball team completed their season with a 10-1 record and beat a school that had not lost a game in 2 years. We had an opportunity of going undefeated but we want to give a big shout out to the team and Coaches Dunn and Jones for the start of a "dynasty". Our cheerleaders and families followed us to games and I am sure that we have started a trend for upcoming seasons. The support of our students, families, and staff was amazing.

Finally, it continues to be the ultimate honor to be principal of Montebello Elementary Middle School. Our goal is to provide the Montebello community a learning experience and environment that is world class because our students and families deserve it. Thank you for partnering with us in creating the school that WE want.

Dolphin Pride,

Troy K. Mitchell, Principal

Montebello's Core Value of the Month

April Core Value - Wisdom

A wise person makes good choices; waits for negative feelings like anger and resentment to pass before taking action; and considers others as much as themselves.

At Risk for Chronic Absence (ARCA)

ARCA is defined as any student who has missed 10% or more of the possible school days. This is a floating % based on the school day. (i.e. School day 80 / 8 absences = ARCA , School day 90 / 8 absences not ARCA). Students who miss 18 or more days at any point in the school year are identified as ARCA. We will continue to reach out to parents of students who have consecutive day absences or 3 or more days absent in a week to help identify barriers to attendance. The attendance team is also working on ways to address our attendance issues.

School ID Cards

Montebello will be instituting the use of identification cards for all students this month. Students will be issued IDs based on their photos in Infinite Campus (IC). These ID cards will be used to issue late passes in the morning to speed up the process. We will eventually use these to track student class attendance and tardiness for Middle School. The students will be receiving their ID cards and lanyards starting the week of April 10th. They are to have their ID cards with them daily.

Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP)

Montebello will begin English Language Arts (MCAP) testing the week of April 17th for all students in grades 3-8. It is important that students attend school daily and on time for this assessment. Please encourage your student to take the assessment seriously and to do their best on the test. Mathematics testing will begin the week of April 28th. We will be doing reviews in school and continuing to teach but your support at home is a must. Ask your students what they are learning and ask to see their notebooks. These scores ultimately impact student opportunities in the future (i.e. Middle School Choice). Help us write the narrative of what Montebello students can do.
